The dynamics between the SPLDF and Pokot cattle bandits are totally different. SPLDF were a separist group and posed a direct threat to national security(insurgency). They were suspect of receiving training, weapons and financial support from outside sources and had to be dealt with immediately, effectively and brutally to send a clear and direct message that the government was not going to tolerate an insurgency and was willing to go all out. Rustlers on the other hand are just a bunch of bandits stuck in time with an old age cultural practice … simply put; posing no significant threat to the government than the occasional annoyance. The complexities of rustling are such that; as with most traditions, fact and fiction have become inextricably intertwined it’s hard to separate one from the other without causing more damage. It’s best left as it is and hope it eventually works itself out. Time will tell …
