The trip to Walter Reed Medical Center for the presidents “routine physical” was not initially on the president’s schedule but announced hours before Biden departed the White House shortly before 8:30 a.m. EST. He arrived at the Bethesda, Md., hospital at 8:51 a.m. EST.

“As was the case when President George W. Bush had the same procedure in 2002 and 2007, and following the process set out in the Constitution, President Biden will transfer power to the Vice President for the brief period of time when he is under anesthesia,” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement. “The Vice President will work from her office in the West Wing during this time.”
Psaki said the White House will publicly release a written summary of the president’s physical later in the afternoon.
Harris, the nation’s first woman vice president, will become the first woman to assume presidential power.
