Online Magazine: How Do You Monetize it in Kenya?

The great effort by TalkVille (sic!) sparked an idea in me - a specialist online monthly magazine say on the tourism industry.

Lets call it TourKenya.

Collecting/writing/editing the material/pictures to put in the magazine will not be hard.

My dilemma is, HOW DO YOU MONETISE such a product? IE, how do you make money out of it to pay contributers, maintain the site and make some profit?

Of course the broad answer is ‘ads’, but how would one need to go about this?

How can one make revenues from readers?

Make suggestions, however outlandish. I will be much obliged.

Utalipa mangapi?

kuna manzi niliona kwa ile show ya K24 young and rich, she does kitu kama hio and she is a millionaire but magazine yake ni ya fashion

For a moderator you are a rather a letdown. Instead of advancing a thread you derail it? Pathetic!

Ads ads ads… Or write reviews n get paid for those reviews eg about Kempinski Olare if you have a deal with em na wakulipe

If the content is truly unique then there are other ways of monetizing it apart from ads. You can use the freemium model, whereby you provide some free content but ask for payment if the reader wants more detailed content. Lakini it takes a long time to monetize, your focus should be on content first.

pia the economist and financial times
ukisoma article tatu kuna add huwa ina pop up inakwambia ulipe… you can also try that model

I’ve also been thinking of something similar for my domain of speciality…

I personally don’t like ads, so one approach I figure, is initially, give the good stuff for free, because the barrier of entry (for an online magazine) is so low, generate a serious following, then start releasing hard to access content (read highly specialized/customized) content for only paying subscribers (meanwhile, continue releasing free content, you don’t want to alienate those who are popularizing you). Eventually, you’ll get corporates who want to ‘sponsor’ certain posts.

When that happens, hold your end in the bargaining, and don’t modify the actual content to suit their interests, people who follow your stuff at this point can easily smell corporate BS, only adding something like ‘sponsored by xyz’ is sufficient advertising for them, and worth what they’re offering you.

Uta print then ufunge matharigo nayo
