I work online so I have a bit more knowledge of this than most people.
The trick to enjoying your work-life more is to apply for fully remote jobs rather than freelancing. You get almost all the advantages of working as a freelancer plus job security, a lot of travel and more money.
If you are a techie, of course target companies based in Silicon Valley, Boston or New York. Those have the highest rate of listing on NASDAQ in the respective order.
Note you do not need a VISA to work remotely. You only need a work permit in your country of operation i.e. Kenya in this case. You also don’t need paypal blah blah blah when you go this way coz your money will just be wired to your account and you will receive it on same day or after 2 business days max.
Now the challenges are:
-
It is incredibly HARD for you to get hired. There is a lot of competition from people based in Europe and Asia mostly. You may have to pass way better than the rest of the candidates to get hired for the same position e.g. if they get a 80 you would probably have to get a 90 since the hiring managers are not very aware of the tech scene in Africa hence you have more to prove.
-
You will probably have to do 5+ interviews in most companies you work for.
-
The easiest way for you to get such a job is to have a stunning Github contribution map. Especially if you have contributed to some of large open source projects.
I will give you an example; some company approached me to give me a job offer for a relatively senior position. But I have still hard to do 5 interviews.
e.g. After passing all the interviews and getting an interview with the CEO, he still has me do a final technical interview to confirm that I am a good hire.
May have something to do with an age factor of being quite young but applying to work on a role requiring 7+ years experience too but you get the drift.
Lastly here are some tools that are becoming very popular nowadays and you may probably be tested in depending on the type of role you apply for if you are applying for a tech job.
- Docker or LXC at least
- A testing framework for the language you use
- A javascript front-end framework especially Angular or React
- Go and NodeJS are quite hip these days especially the former.
- Linux of course unless you are applying to a .NET shop
- Git. All tech companies will probably require/assume you to know this

Impressive stuff. Good luck in your interview. I have always wondered where i can go to get more knowledge. I am mostly self taught.
Thanks.
If you are a programmer, here are some of the best places to train.
online courses
- pluralsight.com - has also really advanced stuff
- codeschool.com
- teamtreehouse.com
Of course these are paid courses but you can still torrent and come and pay your dues later :D:D
Practice places
- Hackerank
- codekata.com
- https://projecteuler.net/
Most startups will emphasize on practical exercises and verbal questions that deal towards practicality while most established companies will emphasize more on algorithms and data structures.

From time to time. Yeah. All fully remote offices I know have at least 2 company summits for employees to meet up since there is much less personal touch on your day to day job compared to the usual on premise job.
I’ve traveled to 9 countries in the past year
