Hi guys,can someone make me understand in layman’s language what the difference between 5w 30 and 5w 40. I was using 5w 40 and now my mech is insisting on new packaged total’s 5w 30 yet gari ni nzee kiasi…i thought as the car get old nafaa nirudi mineral.kindly rate this product and advice on best i can use. Thanks
The older the engine gets, the heavier the oil is needed

What does your car manual say about oil specification? My ex-jap car manual says 5W 20 but all petrol stations in Kenya have 5W 40 which I have used without any problems. For our hot temperatures, I think the 5W 40 is most suitable.

Lighter oil at this point is likely to pass leak through gaskets, seals and piston rings. Unless you overhaul your engine regularly.
How old is an older engine? Mileage?
Depends with the brand of the car , and the environment the car is used on. For instance, summers in Texas are brutal, and most car down here will leal various components oil, while the same car won’t have those leakages in Maine during summer.
