People use to say the cost of living in Mombasa is lower compared to Nairobi but i am finding the exact opposite. I moved to Mombasa some few weeks ago and I am finding everything costly over here. For you to rent a house you need to pay 2 months deposit plus rent plus half the cost of agent …so if the cost of house is 15,000 per month
you need to pay 15,000*3 plus 7,000 for agent which equals to 52,000 plus agreement fee of 3 000 which brings the final value of getting that house to 55,000. Bed which i purchased in Nairobi for 6,000 is going for sh 12, 000 over here. Other things needed for house are overpriced over here. To make it worse the rentals or residential areas and urban here is poorly planned . You can find very good flats built inside or besides slums. Most of the rentals look like vasco dagama type of buildings, they appear as if they were built during the colonial times. In addition, most of the rentals with vacancies are normally dirty to the core. Even most of the major hotels here for middle class are very dirty, one wonders how people survive here. I have even sworn not to eat in these hotels when i noticed the way they do not care about cleanliness. I believe Mombasa is one of the poorly planned cities in Kenya, compounded with dirt all over and slums almost every part of the town.
Well we certainly won’t change your situation, make piece with it,learn new descent places. Others have been eating in those dirty hotels they haven’t died as of yet you ain’t special and certainly won’t die(budget supermarket next to gpo has a nice hotel)
