You have a point when you say that our actions define who we are, but you seem oblivious how much of a motivator religion is… It is very easy to kill a child (I am not mentioning names Abraham) when your moral basis is anchored on another being who promises to absolve you of your vile deed. Religion allows empathetic people to do apathetic things that deter progress.

There is no contradiction there because there is nowhere Jesus said that people should commit adultery or any other sin, but what He meant was that if you are a sinner God can forgive you your sins and start a new life.
