Jean Grae is one of those artist that make you feel conflicted, she is that rare thing that you want to share with the world and still keep it all to yourself. You really want people to know about her, but you feel like by giving her to them, you are giving an important part of yourself. There those moments when you sit with people and they begin naming their favorite Femcees and you keep waiting for someone to mention her name and then nobody does so you feel happy and sad at the same time. Then comes your turn and you want to say some other artist like Mc Lyte, Trina, Nicki Minaj, but you feel bad betraying your true love so you blurt " Jean Grae" and someone asks who that is and suddenly you realize what you have just done and so you say “X-Men” hoping they won’t ask further about her. And they usually don’t so you breath a sigh of relief… or is it regret?

Jean is a hard hitter and she could step on stage and go toe to toe with the greatest, which unfortunately is dominated by men, and not break a sweat. She isn’t whinny or vindictive, she just tells it as it is… Jean is human first, then poet/rapper and finally a woman. And that is how she presents her music. She may not be blessed with looks, but she has hooks in abundance. She isn’t a commercial product, she is too all over the place, in a good way, and most major record labels don’t seem to like that… sometimes she can be inconsistent.

The only Jean Grey that matters:

I say too real. It’s not like she has a chip on her shoulder on something… she is a very funny person once you get to know her… I think that the fact you have to immerse yourself into her world to know what she is about is what makes her a difficult sell. She still hangs onto the back packer era.

If the two of them fought Jean Grae would beat up Jean Grey up because Jean Grae is human and Jean Grae is a cartoon.

Vern to Teddy - Stand By Me.

Image, sound, message and everything feels very borrowed. Not “influenced”. The word is “borrowed”.

Its a mix of almost all Neo Soul female artistes and a heavy dose of Charlie Baltimore and a bit of EVE sprinkled in … plus some other obscure “hard” female artistes …

… oh yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh now I remember another significant female artiste who she kinda upgraded-ish from …

DRUMROLL…

ITS
JONELL!

… but with less sing-rapping and more talk-rapping

oh damn! even the track structuring! ROR!

So what is that line that divides the two? Because if that is the case we can pick
