Memories
The first time I ever heard a Eminem song was in a matatu on a stage in Majengo headed to Mombasa (Cleanin’ out My Closet). I wasn’t travelling or anything, just sitting there to give the illusion that the mat was near full. We called it Chambo (Bait) and we would get out once the mat attained a considerable number of passengers. We got paid in street cred and free rides… we were the cool kids. I went home and coincidentally saw the music video on Channel O… and then again the following day. Ever experienced that… you see something or learn a new word that didn’t exist in your life before and from then on it just starts popping everywhere around you? White man rapping for me! At the time I was into being a gangster (well at least dressing up like one) so I used to save up my money and buy those oversized basketball jerseys, Mawaitis (White Tees) and The Source Magazine… at one point I even owned grills…If you saw pictures of me from back then you would be forgiven for thinking I had been stuck in a time-loop that replayed Halloween over and over…The Blunder Years.
