Most Profitable Agric Venture of the Year

Villagers, which is most profitable venture taking into consideration the workforce required, supervision, time to get returns and market stability. After the drought we’ve just had food prices for most commodities has come down except tomatoes and a few other things. Who has ever had a greenhouse? I have recently bought 15 seedlings of grafted passion fruit as a pilot project. Contributions from veteran farmers kwa kijiji will be highly appreciated

Anyone with experience in fish farming… I have a huge pond in the land 25Mx40M and was thinking of catfish.

i am assuming you asking about horticultural farming. .
any crop cabbage, onions, fruits, tomatoes, watermelons, sugar snaps, snowpeas, green maize etc is profitable.
for labour and supervision hapo hakuna shortcut most labour in kenya is very ineffient and getting good workers is hard so constant strict supervision is very necessary.
prices of inputs is high accross board: hybrid seeds fertilizer pesticides are all costly
returns /sales fluctuate so trick is to have constant supply /production or be good at timing and prediction like if you have tomatoes in the cold months of june/july you get good money.
water is a must if you dont have consistent supply or storage dont even think of farming
lastly it is a very risky venture so be prepared to get your fingers burnt several times…dont believe these blog posts by kina @Mkulima ati ‘how a farmer makes one million from watermelon every month’ because they dont tell you how many losses that farmer had to become successful…
** i am a theoretical farmer so this story is not from experience but observations from other farmers**

if the pond is more than 3m deep do mud fish. kuna hesabu ya how many you can stock per size of pond btt nimesahau though i can make enquiries if you want

Saidia tafadhali with all the info’… the pond is is more than 3 M deep and has plastic liners with reinforced barriers. I am torn between using the water pond for irrigation or rearing fish. Is it possible to do both?

contact Farm Africa, they are empowering fish farmers, especially those doing catfish and tilapia. They might give you guidance on how to start.

Thanks.

I am doing so immediately. Do you have a contact?

do both. fish do not require a lot of water so as long as you dont empty the pond you are okey., again water from a fish pond is very good for crops nutrient wise.best thing visit the local ministry of agriculture livestock and fisheries office and ask for advice, those guys are very knowledeable

Thanks, I have seen it. It seems they are only supporting people that are already in the business and not start-ups. Anyway I have written to them.

where is your farm located i could have some contacts there
