Long long ago mobile phones such a s the Nokia 3310 had Ringtone Composter where you could input music notes and save the tune.
There was also a market for ringtones from famous or hit songs. You dialed some USSD code and some airtime was deducted from you and you received an SMS with some musical notes which when saved became a ringtone.
