Millienal parents living in the city. Do you teach your kids their native languages

Went to a family gathering on Dec 27 and I realized that all their kids can’t speak in Kikuyu.. parents were even speaking to them in English( probably dick measuring to show they attend good schools). Do you teach your kids their native languages

I only speak @gikuyu
Njaragia gikuyù niie

The point of language is communication. I think there are very few, if any, people in mount kenya who don’t understand English or kiswahili.
Teaching them may be a matter of ethnic pride but it doesn’t change their lives that much. They’ll still live their lives to the fullest whether they speak it or not.

I disagree, you need to teach your kids your native language. It promotes culture, cohesion in the family and generally makes integration easier.
They may not like it when they are young but appreciate it later in life.

Hizi languages ndio zinaleta division. We should just keep Swahili. It’s getting there. Most kids won’t speak their native languages and will marry outside their tribes. Being proud of your tribe ni ufala. You should be proud of something in your control. Like not visiting Calabash. Donge @cortedivoire

Native language is useless to a person who will soon be a global citizen.

I will only teach my children languages that open up big economic opportunities, like English, Mandarin, French and Spanish. There is no need for him to learn some tribal language just so they can converse with village drunks and subsistence farmers. How will that help them?

Exactly. My kids speak good English and Kiswahili. Wanasoma French pia. Sasa mimi hata lugha ya mama na baba naongea nusu nusu na haina saidii hata ni ya nini?

Your Kikuyu is only useful when flirting with elderly women in Nyeri.

Internationally, you must communicate in common languages eg. English, French, Spanish. Mandarin etc.

For example: " @Josto_Bwaku adore câliner et masser @Kanguthi "

Rustler I can’t speak Pokot for shit, yet I’m probably the wealthiest and most influential Pokot (well at least my family is). My daughter born and raised in Kenya can’t speak Swahili for shit either and Rustler’s kwa ground already have a song in praise of her. Bora risasi zifike and the more they praise the more bullets they likely to get. Na tunasonga tukienda …
