THe Meru County Assembly has passed a second supplementary budget approving the payment of sh374.6 million in health workers allowances. This is after the National Govt allocated funds for nursing services, doctors, and their allowances.
THe county’s 970 nurses will get sh 100.6m in allowances, sh60.7m for 134 doctors, sh16.8m as call allowance and sh240m for health workers allowances.
The allowances have increased the health department’s salaries from sh1.6 billion to sh2 billon annually.
Elsewhere, Tharaka Nithi Governor has said his administration will not increase nurses pay. He said nurses were getting far better salaries than other county employees.
“Before devolution, they were getting 23,000 a month. Newly employed nurses now earn 73,000”, said Mr Ragwa, who is also the secretary of the COG Health Committee. “We have no funds to increase their salaries”.
Remuneration is a factor of vitu mingi…level of education being first and foremost. Ndio maana kuna kuwanga na job groups…ndio maana saa hizi kenya tuko na a ile SRC commission ambayo ina deal na mambo ya ku harmonize mishahara ya watu kenya hii. Ukilipa nurses 73K, rafiki yangu lazma upatie graduates wako wote over 100K. Halafu siku moja madaktari watakuitisha 900K starting salary…ndio utajua kumbe hujui.
