Most of the design choices are from research done with the aid of some psychology. There is a reason to why new messages are in red or some colour choices. Others are because some used it first, Like the search box huwa top left in most sites because some used it first so everyone got used to it. Only akina google, Amazon, Youtube have theirs at the centre because Search is an integral part of their website.
