I’m in a position where my current organization has offered me a retention bonus tied to my staying in the organization and continued performance, am wondering what’s an expert advice on such offers? what should i be wary of ? Job si issue. … i can always get another one.
How long is the retention bonus?
Is the employer competitive? And are you happy with the organization, ama uko hapo just because you havent found a better job? Does the retention interfere with your future plans, like you wanted to move to self-employment, back to school, etc?
You need to answer all these questions before putting your signature on the dotted line.
The retention bonus runs to december, then which i will be promoted to a new role that matches the salary scale for the my current compensation and bonus.
So , the retention offer includes taking me back to school to do certain courses fully funded by the organisation, i dont have immediate plans of self-employment as i’m using this opportunity to network and gain business skills (from a strongly technical background.)… In all aspects i find the retention offer serving what i immediately see, my worry is of the unknown to me… and if there is anyway that i could be shafted… which is always possible.
So, the offer fits into your mid-term plans. Take it. When shafted, shaft someone. obviously iko na exit clause. just ensure it is achievable.
grab it
Read the exit clause and then read it again. If the contract does not have an exit clause, then demand that one is added, and ensure that you are ok with what it says. December si mbali, but then again it would be immoral to accept the offer, get extra, paid-for training and then jump ship in January. So think beyond December before committing.
