Master’s in Finance and Decision Engineering

What does that degree entail to engineer a decision. The PS of transport Irungu Nyakera has one

Siku hizi I am hardly impressed by the papers one has. Everyone has them anyway!

It’s all about you as an individual. What do you bring to the table? What’s your Unique Selling Proposition? Why should I hire you over the next guy? How are your soft skills? You know, the shit they don’t teach at school, yet it makes all the difference!

Last month, I interviewed a ka-guy with a 1st class honours degree but the 30mins I spent with him made me seriously question the authenticity of that ‘paper.’ Dude could barely express himself and seemed totally out of his element. He could also not answer questions on basic accounting concepts yet he became a CPA-K over 4 years ago. It was just sad.

I get that, I interview them too. But what on earth is Decision engineering?

de·ci·sion - /dəˈsiZHən/
noun

  1. a conclusion or resolution reached after consideration.

Engineering is the application
of mathematics, empirical
evidence and scientific,
economic, social, and practical
knowledge in order to invent,
innovate, design, build,
maintain, research, and
improve structures, machines,
tools, systems, components,
materials, and processes.

Hehe Decision intelligence - Wikipedia

There is a unit in Strategic Management that is similar to this, why give it such a pompous name. Hi my name is XYZ, I’m a Decision Engineer…that doesn’t even sound right

Pompous indeed! I happen to know a Financial Engineer in this Nairobi! Financial engineering - Wikipedia

Sounds like the kind of guy I would like on my team when I decide to defraud government.

hebu 1 question? naenda interview

This kinda got me looking at the Transport and Infrastructure Docket…

CS…James Macharia
Mr. Wilson Nyakera the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Transport
Mrs. Nancy Wakarima Karigithu the State Department for Maritime Commerce

Yaani they are all from the same region…ok sips my tea

The vetting report by the Departmental Committee on Transport, Public Works and Housing is even more curious here is the recommendation…

5.0 COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS
At the end of the vetting process, the Committee made the following recommendation:
That; having considered the suitability, capacity and integrity of the nominees, and pursuant to Article 155(3) of the Constitution and Section 8 (2) of the Schedule to the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act No. 33 of 2011, the Committee recommends that the National Assembly approves the nomination of: -

  1. Ms. Aidah Njeri Munano for appointment by H.E. the President as the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Housing and Urban Development

  2. Prof. Paul Maringa Mwangi for appointment by H.E. the President as the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Public Works

  3. Mr. Wilson Nyakera Irungu for appointment by H.E. the President as the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Transport

  4. Mrs. Nancy Wakarima Karigithu for appointment by H.E. the President as the Principal Secretary for the State Department for Maritime Commerce

for all four nominees isnt regional balance a part of the approval process…this is not to say that they are not qualified but so are many others Kenyans who only reason they were not considered is becaus ef their second names betrayed them

Find the attached report( for those wh accuse me misinformation)

looking at the hansard report only 1 MP’s raised the mattter of regional balance

[li]Harrison Garama Kombe [/li]Uzalendo haujapata kuonyeshwa hapa hata kidogo.

no other extra cirriculum activities?

Just be yourself. That’s all I can tell you. Go to interviews with a mentality that u can promptly answer anything thrown at you. Even the ones you don’t know or have forgotten, u can at least think on your feet and give your best shot. Trying to anticipate all the questions u might be asked will leave you nervous and doom you to failure!

The trend i have noticed this days is that employers will not relay on your educational achievements (those will only be used to shorlist you) but after that before securing the job…they will use your refferals to gauge your suitability…so kama the former job you left because of non perfomance or other issues they will not consider you further…so make sure you dont leave a place with a bad image and always leave a positive mark kwa sababu hio ndio itakusaidia

And DO NOT LIE!!! Nothing is more infuriating than when an interviewee is lying, if you don’t know something just admit it. Honesty will get you a lot of points.

What I have also learnt is that you will be SHORTLISTED with the papers and experience on your CV, but you will be HIRED based on your ATTITUDE and APTITUDE.

So many guys in Kenya apply incessantly for jobs but they’re hardly ever called for interviews. I have noticed that, even though they might have the papers and experience, the packaging of their CV really leaves a lot to be desired. Poor formatting, serious grammatical errors (cc @gashwin ), irrelevant content etc. Nobody would like to take your application further if they’re appalled by your CV. I think there is a very huge market for professional CV writing in Kenya. Even more than project writing.

Once you are in the interview room, the ATTITUDE you carry yourself with will go a long way in helping your cause. A trained and experienced interviewer is able to gauge this through relevant leading questions so as to determine if you’re the right fit. The candidate with the right attitude will go a long way in determining their day to day performance of duties and also interactions with colleagues. Keep this in mind, nobody wants to hire a 1st Class Honours grad who will be excellent with the paperwork but a pain in the a.

Since there is a general consensus that papers nowadays don’t mean shit and are just for shortlisting, it is important nowadays for good recruiters to have their OWN way of gauging APTITUDE. Picture this; one day, you will shortlist a KCSE 2015 graduate who got an A plain thanks to WhatsApp leakages. You know and remember very well that the exam in question had no credibility. Yet you don’t wanna hire a dud. Why not create your own tamper proof aptitude tests that will help you separate the wheat from the chaff?
