That up there was Jamhuri (Independence) day December 1963. Madaraka (i.e. internal self rule) day came later in June 1964.
When we became independent in 1963 we had no control over foreign affairs, defence and finance. This was granted later hence madaraka day.
Madaraka was the internal self rule June 1. 1963 which came 6 months before Independence Dec 1963 - Jamhuri.
