Then today it suddenly hit me.

When the heaps become flatter because of vibration and movement, the cords will become less taut. And whatever logs they had fastened will become loose and mobile. And whatever the logs were holding will scatter some more and the heap will keep reducing. You get the drift. The logs will even fall off because nothing keeps them in place anymore.
