Polygamy is not viable in the current legal environment. It is the law that wears you out, and our grandfathers did not have that fighting them. I always find it stupid when someone compares modern life to ancient life. Your grandfather paid no school fees, or had the freedom to choose who went to school and who didn’t. Your grandfather had kids fending for themselves and contributing to the household economy as soon as they started walking. They fetched water, grazed cows, tilled the land, collected firewood etc. Modern kids don’t contribute to the economy of the household so their entire burden is shouldered by parents. Your grandfather never worried about land, it was easily available. Land is the primary factor if production. Today many Kenyans dont own any land.
That’s part of the problem. 99% of men cannot afford to have multiple wives without severely downgrading their lifestyle. Juzi uliona it only takes $20,000 to be a one percenter in KE. A measly $20,000 and you are richer than 99% of Kenyans. So technically, 99.99 percent of men cannot truly afford having multiple wives unless they want a life of peasantry.
Even if you are wealthy, women and children are draining from a psychological standpoint because there are some responsibilities you can’t delegate regardless of how much money you have. What would you rather do? Go to the coast and have fun at a beach house, or attend your ninth born son’s prize giving day :D:D Would you rather have drinks with your friends and talk about interesting stuff, or attend your fifth wife’s brothers wedding?? Upuzi tuu. I would even go ahead and state that ideally, a man is better off having a maximum of two wives and that’s if he is wealthy enough not to compromise his lifestyle.

Although I started working nikiwa 21 years, my first good salary (80k p.m) was after i graduated nikiwa 26 years. This was five years ago. I didn’t marry nor upgrade my life, At most nilikuwa natumia 30k in a month. So i use to save 50k per month for like three years. Coming from a polygamous family I agree with you to a large extent but, hapo pa attending prize giving is a choice; one can find fulfilment attending to family rather than buddies
