The young lady who has since been identified as Fridah Kamuyu died with 39-year-old Tirus Maina last week.

May she rest in peace.

The widow of Tirus Maina had asked the public for any leads that might help them identify the woman and find her kin.

Margaret said nobody had shown up to claim the body at Nairobi’s City Mortuary, adding that the deceased’s family needed closure.

"We have not been able to identify the family of the young lady who drowned together with my husband in Juja on Tuesday
because when she was retrieved from the dam, she had no identification documents. I have no problem getting to know who
her family is or who can help us get to know them so that they can also have closure,’’ she said.

Hundreds of friends and relatives thronged the homestead for the burial which was hurriedly conducted without speeches or photography. The burial service was conducted by a pastor from the Anglican Church of Kenya.

The ceremony was enveloped with tension as reports went around that the deceased had two wives who were all present. However, none of the wives nor the children was introduced.

Maina’s close friend who sought anonymity told Nation.Africa at the burial that a comprehensive eulogy had been prepared but friends and some relatives were shocked upon arrival at the homestead only to find a brief programme.

“We had done a very comprehensive eulogy but it is not the one we found here. The eulogy was only written in English, just one version, and was read out by one of the villagers. We were surprised when we saw this brief eulogy which is different from the initial one,” the source said.

It was also disclosed that the 22-year-old Fridah Warau Kamuyu who was found dead alongside Maina, ‘was his new catch’.
“Well, the lady was his new catch. And sadly, the event went that way. Just one person knew that the deceased was going to meet that girl. Maina called the guy who talked to her on phone as they headed to the dam. The guy was shocked when he later learned what had transpired,” he said.

The family of Ms Warau, Thursday, managed to identify the lady whose body had been lying in the mortuary for over a week. She had recently graduated from university.

This is after Ms Margaret Kiiru, Maina’s wife, appealed to the well-wishers to help her trace the family of the body.

The source said that Maina’s first wife has three children who are all learning in prestigious schools.
“The eldest child is in secondary school while the other two are in primary. Let us give credit where it is due, my friend was a good parent and he gave his children the best. We pray that part of what he has left will cater for his children,” he said.

“There was a little tension during the burial because the first and second wives were present. None of them was allowed to address the mourners. We are happy that it went on smoothly without hiccups,” he added.

The source mourned Mr Maina as a great entrepreneur who had excelled in business through Hardrock Engineering Company where he was a managing partner. The company, situated at Thika, deals with ballast.

“He was a great entrepreneur, but even his staff and colleagues were never allowed to address mourners. The business was booming and made him travel far and wide,” he said.

Maina was easily identified after the number plates of his motor vehicle were shared online.

He had packed his Nissan X-trail at the edge of the dam and police sources and the Kiambu fire and emergency department that retrieved their bodies as well as the motor vehicle told Nation.Africa suspected two theories about the incident.

One, Mr Maina was drunk and instead of reversing the vehicle, drove into the dam either by mistake or intentionally and sank, another theory police are pursuing is that of a probable suicide theory.

Juja OCPD Phyllis Muthoni told Nation last week that preliminary investigations had revealed that Maina may have driven the motor vehicle into the dam.
“We managed to retrieve the vehicle from the dam and found it in drive mode, meaning the deceased (Maina) may have driven the vehicle into the dam by mistake. We are not ruling out any other factors in the incident and that is why we are investigating the incident. I do not want to discuss it further until the full investigation is complete,” Ms Muthoni told Nation.Africa.

If the police are speculating so can I.

My theory is that Warau could not swim and Maina knew this. She tried to blackmail him and he drove her into the dam hoping to escape and leave her but she clang to him and they drowned.

Theory number two is that Maina knew Warau could not swim. He took out a life insurance policy on her and was going to get double helpings for the car and life insurance. However he had not anticipated bring unable to unlock the door underwater and went down a watery grave.

Theory number three is Warau started playing with the stick and unintentionally put the car in drive. Naye mzee akastretch mifupa bila kujua gari ikaruka kwa maji.

As she lay dead in the mortuary for nine days, none of her relatives or friends noticed she was missing.

No missing person’s report was made, and in the end, it is detectives who went looking for her parents to identify her body in the mortuary.

Fridah died alongside Tirus Maina Gikonyo in his vehicle when it slid into the water.

Maina was quickly identified by his family members from his vehicle registration, and the police investigators were able to establish that he was a consultant and supplier in the building industry, both locally and in Africa.

His file at Juja Police station indicates that he was born in 1984 in Nyeri County as the third-born son of the late Joseph Gikonyo and Madrin Wangui.
As for Fridah, she would be identified on January 26. Detectives traced her home to Murang’a County’s Njiku village in Mathioya constituency, although her parents live in Nairobi.
Such a tragedy happening to such a young person would normally elicit activity on social media, but for Fridah, everything around her was as silent as a tomb.
Information in her file at Juja police station starts by classifying her on January 18 as “an unidentified adult African female recovered from a water body in a drowning accident”.
The incident’s notes indicate that she had no identification document on her, classifying her case as Pending Under Investigations (PUI).

After her body was retrieved from the dam, scene-of-crime detectives took her fingerprints, which would later be scanned for identification at the Registrar of Persons after it was noted there was a delay in getting anyone to positively identify her.

Her incident file indicates in the preliminary report that “lack of documents on her complicated identification process and it was only through prints imaging that it was possible to profile her bio, leading to contacting her relatives”.
The relatives showed up at the City Mortuary, Nairobi, on Thursday, January 26, and positively identified her, allowing the detectives to have a post-mortem done. It showed Fridah died of drowning.
She also had bruises on her left wrist.
Police say she is the second-born in a family of four, and holds a diploma in hospitality from a Kiambu college from which she graduated last November.
The file further indicates that while schooling in Thika, she had grown detached from her close relatives.
She ran a money transfer agency in Thika town “and also did some socialite gigs in the town and in the process hooked up with the male friend with whom she died”.
Maina had got her a rented house in Makongeni estate on the outskirts of Thika town, and it is reported they had been seeing each other for four months.
One of her close male friends from Makongeni said she was planning to leave the country “for greener pastures”.

While the two have been identified and post-mortems, as well as witness statements, have ruled out foul play, Kiambu County criminal investigations boss Richard Mwaura said detectives will now seek to unravel whether the drowning was an accident.
“Mechanical analysis of the vehicle, state of the bodies as recovered, analysis of autopsies, toxicology reports to ascertain chemical concentrations and sound deductions from correlated deductions will give us a file closure or escalation position,” he said.
