A simulated terror attack at a Kenyan university resulted in such panic that more than 30 people were injured and one woman died, officials said.

Police arranged a press conference on Tuesday morning in a bid to deal with growing public anger at the disastrous drill, which Strathmore University said was designed to “test the preparedness of the university community”.

In a statement, the Nairobi institution identified the woman who died as 33-year-old Esther Kidambi, a staff member working in its catering department.

Staff and students fled in panic after apparently unidentified gunmen repeatedly fired blanks into the air without warning.

Witnesses described a stampede, with people wading away from the campus across a river, throwing themselves out of high windows or hiding and calling loved-ones.

Ms Kidambi died from head injuries after jumping from a third floor window, according to the local Star newspaper. Others suffered broken legs, including a professor who jumped from the fourth floor.
While there were apparently some messages on security services’ social media accounts declaring a terror drill would take place at a “major university” in the Kenyan capital the day before.

But the vast majority were unaware of the planned drill, and as of Monday night the university said 31 students and staff injured in the panic to escape were being treated across three hospitals.

One tutor at Strathmore said students, who had also not been informed about the security drill, panicked in fear that the exercise was an attack by al-Shabaab militants like the one at Garissa University earlier this year.

“I heard two gunshots,” she said. “Everyone started running, I grabbed whatever I could.”

A student told the Star: “I ran into a classroom, but the gunshots still intensified, so I jumped through the window and saw some of my colleagues also trying to jump in the same manner.”

Betty Ngala, a spokeswoman for the university, said teams of security marshals had been prepared for the drill and “trained on evacuation, assembly points and exit points”.

“This simulation was aimed at testing the preparedness of the university community and emergency team in the event of an attack.

“Unfortunately some students and staff panicked and got injured… We have started an intensive assessment of key lessons learnt during this simulation. We will reveal these to the necessary authorities.”

Two lives lost in such a reckless exercise.

What is more worrying is that international news houses are aware. Imagine the publicity!

If it were Nairobi Aviation … they could be forgiven for not knowing any better. But Strathmore Uni? Such a shame

It shows how shallow minded some people are, to think terrorism is a joke

I thought a drill is supposed to be part of a training exercise si ku ambush watu.

Does a drill bullet sound different mate? Mark you they used live bullets. Reaction to fear reduces rationality in all humans, higher or lower I.Q alike, rich or poor alike.

Al shabaab is winning without even trying.

That’s what I meant … Strath’ administration should have known that.

No dolt should blame their melon-headedness on poorly designed drills.

And good luck trying to save your life by jumping to a certain death.

I would term this as an alshabaab attack that is being covered up (feigning security drill) just to avoid calling the organizers criminals and quacks

Sad…very sad indeed!!, how do you carry out such as drill without assessing the most probable risks such as people jumping from windows, injuries from stampedes… I really expected more from Strathmore

Anyone calling those who jumped off buildings idiots should know better. Lack of understanding of the basic human psychology is at display by all dolts trying to display their wit by stepping on the fallen. In a situation of panic the hormone adrenalin is released. This appeals to our very primal instinct of fight or flight. Adrenalin takes over the brain so to speak. Then cost effect analysis is carried out in the brain within fractions of micro seconds to access the best route. Fight a gunman=death, run/jump=probable survival. Guess what outcome is favoured? It is this very same tact that pick pockets utilize to steal by alleging a police crackdown/safety belt inspection. Unless you have been in a similar situation, chances are you witty cunts are the ones who will jump onto oncoming traffic, kwanza trela ya mguu kumi na sita.

Sad.

The outcome was sad, and indeed if “they were testing the preparedness of the university”, then the answer is clear, the university is not prepared for such an occurrence, but still, unconfirmed sources claim that all the students were fully trained on how to handle such (fake and real) incidences but we are still Africans, nobody took this seriously. Messages, documents, clips, power point slides what to do and what not to do have been highly circulated but most (is repeat most) people take it as upus. I thread was also shared here earlier ( i don’t remember by who) showing a guy demonstrating with a real gun, as usual, most talkers took is child play.

As a start. Google the difference between the sound of an empty gun being fired and the firing of a gun with real bullets, the difference is enormous.

Good evening.

:mad::mad::mad: the trauma inflicted, sad indeed

They could have used blanks or rubber bullets.

Yes, buts it’s good to differentiate or at least have a clue…

Expect more drills in future…The real one will not be a drill. RIP to the departed souls.

They will never win this war. We will degrade and defeat them.
