Let Me Hear Anyone Saying Waiguru's Not A Political Strategist Again....

On Saturday, September 4, DP Ruto, in a meeting with his allies from Mt Kenya, asked for more time to consult and narrow down on possible running mate candidates from the Mt Kenya region for discussion.

Reports indicated that Ruto and his team had identified former CS Mwangi Kiunjuri, governors Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Mwangi wa Iria (Murang’a), Kiraitu Murungi (Meru), Senator Kindiki Kithure, Speaker Justin Muturi Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya and former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth and Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua as possible candidates.

When you discover that you are riding a dead horse, the best strategy is to dismount, bury the horse and get a living one.
However, in government and corporate Africa, more advanced strategies are often employed, such as:

  1. Buying a stronger whip.
  2. Changing riders…
  3. Appointing a committee to study the horse.
  4. Arranging to visit other countries to see how other cultures ride dead horses.
  5. Lowering the standards so that the dead horse can be included.
  6. Reclassifying the dead horse as ‘living impaired.’
  7. Hiring outside contractors to ride the dead horse.
  8. Harnessing several dead horses together to increase speed.
  9. Providing additional funding and training to increase dead horse’s performance.
  10. Doing a productivity study to see if lighter riders would improve the dead horse’s performance.
  11. Declaring that as the dead horse does not have to be fed, it is less costly, carries lower overheads,
and therefore contributes substantially more to the bottom line of the economy than do some other horses.
  12. Rewriting the expected performance requirements for all horses.
    And, of course,
  13. Promoting the dead horse to a supervisory position.

In fact I dare say that Waiguru ndiye ako na Swara. Whoever gets associated with her will cry in the toilet come August next year.

President Kenyatta will be in the county on October 20 to preside over Mashujaa Day celebrations at Wang’uru stadium in Mwea Constituency.

The duo declared a ceasefire ahead of the visit to show respect for the Head of State and ensure peaceful and successful celebrations.

Mr Kibicho and Ms Waiguru resolved to bury the hatchet during a meeting with all elected leaders as well as former legislators.

Some of those in attendance were MPs Kabinga Wathayu (Mwea), George Kariuki (Ndia), Gichimu Githinji (Gichugu), Munene Wambugu (Kirinyaga Central) and Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici.

Others were Senator Charles Kibiru, Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua, Kirinyaga Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri, former Ndia MP Stephen Ngari and Kirinyaga County Assembly Majority leader Kamau Murango.
“We have agreed to uphold peace on Mashujaa Day. As Kirinyaga leaders, we shall have the healthiest competition in this region,” Dr Kibicho said.
Ms Waiguru noted that their political competition has been an issue of concern.
"We have resolved to represent Kirinyaga well in the celebrations so we shall not do anything to embarrass the President or any leader. We shall go to all the constituencies preaching peace ahead of the celebrations.”
The other leaders present promised to prevail upon their supporters to ensure no disruptions at the event which will attract 10,000 Kenyans and guests from other countries.
“We shall ask our supporters to be calm and accord the President and visiting guests the respect they deserve,” Ms Ngirici said.

Local Jubilee Party chairman Mureithi Kang’ara said he was impressed by the way leaders came together as a show of solidarity. He said they will come up with a memorandum which they will submit to the President when he lands in the area.

The accusations
Dr Kibicho and the governor have been at loggerheads for a long time, with the latter accusing the former of undermining her.
Ms Waiguru had been seeing Dr Kibicho as a stumbling block in her efforts to sustain her political career.
She had accused Dr Kibicho of waging a political war against her and placing hurdles against her every move to frustrate her efforts to recapture her seat in 2022 and to develop the region.
She said the PS was fighting her politically allegedly by leaning on her political rivals.
She cited a meeting at Kandongu village on Friday, which Dr Kibicho, Ms Ngirici and her husband Andrew Ngirici attended.

During the meeting, Dr Kibicho and Mr Ngirici, a business tycoon who had been at loggerheads since 2017, reconciled and resolved to work together for the unity and development of the region.
Ms Ngirici, Ms Waiguru’s political rival, declared she will vie for the governor seat but Dr Kibicho assured her that he will not fight it out with her as he was already a civil servant.
Ms Waiguru claimed the meeting was convened by Dr Kibicho to fight her politically.
“He has been scheming against me and when taken to task, he denies it. Even the Friday meeting was meant to attack me,” she said in reference to Dr Kibicho.

She said Dr Kibicho would have invited all elected leaders to the meeting was he genuinely rooting for the unity of the region.
Ms Waiguru told her political rivals to brace themselves for a tough political duel.
“As they plan how to win, we are also doing the same. Let us wait and see who will triumph,” she said.
She further told Dr Kibicho that the Laikipia crisis was a bigger priority than early campaigns.
Further, Ms Waiguru claimed that Dr Kibicho was behind her impeachment which was rejected by the Senate, a claim the PS denied.

Kibicho’s response
But Dr Kibicho insisted he was not interested in any political seat, saying he was satisfied with the job President Kenyatta gave him.
Further, he said he was neither luring Ms Ngirici to join President Kenyatta’s political camp nor had he been carried away by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) wave which is sweeping across the region.
The PS said his sole objective was to see Kirinyaga united.

Last year, Ms Waiguru lashed out at Dr Kibicho over the controversial Sh15 billion Kenya Medical Research Institute project and told him to resign and join politics.
She accused the PS of meddling in the project and told him to keep off.
Ms Waiguru was reacting to a tour of the project by Dr Kibicho, whom she said did not consult her office.
During the visit, Dr Kibicho appeared to blame Governor Waiguru’s government for delays in the project.
“What is PS Kibicho’s interest in this matter?” the governor asked then.

She explained that President Kenyatta required a Memorandum of Understanding to be signed between the county and Kemri for the interests of Kirinyaga residents to be taken into account.
“Is PS Kibicho now superior to the President? If he wants to engage in village politics and insults, he should resign and join others,” she said then.

Kirinyaga Governor, Anne Waiguru, has agreed to join the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a party affiliated with Deputy President William Ruto.
While addressing residents of her county on Wednesday, September 22, Waiguru agreed with their call to defend her seat on a UDA ticket. Defending her move, Waiguru stated that she was only following the electorates’ wish in order to defend her gubernatorial seat. The residents shouted in unison, endorsing her decamping from the ruling Jubilee Party to UDA.

“If they ask me why I chose that party, I will tell them that the people of Kirinyaga picked it for me,” Waiguru stated amid cheers from the crowd.

The first-time governor recently hinted at possibilities of changing her political affiliation ahead of the 2022 General Election.

She has been a staunch supporter of the Jubilee Party faction affiliated with President Uhuru Kenyatta and had from 2018 affiliated herself with ODM leader, Raila Odinga. In September, however, she came out to criticize the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) after the Court of Appeal nullified it, describing it as unpopular in the Mt Kenya region. She later claimed that her statement on the BBI had led to EACC summons, which she termed as political persecution.

Waiguru had earlier raised fears that she could lose her re-election if she vied on the ruling party ticket in the 2022 General Election.

“The truth of the matter is that defending my seat if the polls were held today, would be very difficult.
And that is the truth of the matter, Jubilee needs to look internally at its issues in order to be acceptable to the people of Mt Kenya,” Waiguru stated.

Apart from that, on Friday, September 17 she turned down all the running mate offers from various presidential candidates for the 2022 General Election, stating that her main focus is to get re-elected as governor of Kirinyaga.

The embattled governor confessed she had received numerous offers to be a possible running mate to leading presidential contenders, but declared she is only interested in defending her seat.

“At this point in time, I am seeking to be re-elected as governor of Kirinyaga County.
The day the position changes, I will make it public,” the governor remarked.

She added, “If I ran today on a Jubilee ticket and someone else ran on a different party, even if people felt I had performed, it would be hard to convince them to vote for me.”

The supremacy battle in Kirinyaga on Sunday, October 10, escalated as Governor Anne Waiguru and area Women Representative Purity Ngirici clashed over a billboard.

The standoff saw Mwea town residents block county government officials from pulling down two billboards bearing Ngirici’s image.
The confrontation began early Sunday morning as workers from a local advertising agency arrived in the town and pulled down two billboards containing Ngirici’s portrait image and tried to replace them with those carrying Waiguru’s image.

It took the intervention of Andrew Ngirici the husband to the Women Representative, who gave orders to the workers to put back the billboards.

He claimed that it was wrong to pull them down and insisted that he had a right to erect his billboards in the town.

While addressing the press, Andrew noted that the Governor was trying to provoke him into political chaos ahead of the upcoming Mashujaa celebrations in the county come October 20.

The tycoon added that two other billboards that contained his wife’s portrait in Samson Corner were on Friday, October 8, pulled down.

Ngirici stated that the governor was going against the successful truce meeting called by Interior PS Karanja Kibicho.

The workers who were putting down the billboard were apprehended and taken to Wanguru Police station but were later released.

According to Mwea East sub–County Commandant David Kitavi, a meeting would be called to discuss the matter with the two parties.

The police commandant added that the billboard erections were part of the county’s beautification before the Mashujaa celebrations.

Waiguru and Ngirici (Purity) are expected to face each other on the ballot as they battle the Kirinyaga gubernatorial seat in the 2022 General Election.
