A police officer formerly attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for raping his former sister-in-law in 2017. This is after the Magistrate’s court found him guilty of raping his victim to avenge his wife’s decision to leave him on February 9, 2017, at the GSU headquarters in Ruaraka, Nairobi.
The officer identified as Anthony Ongere Moseti had been under the Independent Policing Oversight Authority’s (Ipoa) radar after a complaint was filed to the Authority after the incident. Subsequent investigations by IPOA established criminal culpability and Moseti was consequently charged with committing an indecent act with an adult, contrary to Section 11A of the Sexual Offences Act in case number IPOA/CMU/218/2017.
In her judgment in March this year, Senior Resident Magistrate CM Njagi found Moseti guilty of rape and the sentencing was set for April 26, but eventually happened today (May 13).
IPOA reported that the incident happened on February 9, 2017, when the woman visited the GSU headquarters in Ruaraka after she was called by the officer, who was well known to her.
“The officer received her at the main gate and her entry was recorded in the visitor’s book in accordance with security measures in place at the institution,” IPOA said.
The officer, however, gave a different name and a false police service number after receiving the woman.
IPOA added that, according to court records, Moseti has since faced disciplinary proceedings for making false records.
The offence was initially reported to senior officers after the woman managed to leave the officer’s house, claiming she was going to buy vegetables.
“During the investigation, the woman reported she was threatened with a panga and was, in turn, referred to Muthaiga police station,” IPOA said
