Trade, Investment and Industry Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has hinted at the government banning second hand clothes popularly known as Mitumba.

Speaking at Changamka Shopping Festival the newly appointed CS, and a former lawmaker said they focus will be on empowering the local textile industry.

Kuria stated that the notion that Mitumba clothes are cheap is misguided. He pointed out that Kenya exports clothes to US at a cheaper price than Mitumba.

“I will work with the textile industry to ensure that we make cheaper clothes available in this market, and then we will ban Mitumba when we give people an alternative,” he stated.

“The price we are selling to clothes to America is much lower than Mitumba so it is not a question of price it is a question of availability,” he said.

Kuria’s sentiments come at a surprise because he opposed the same move when it was proposed by Azimio Leader Raila Odinga in the run up to the August elections.

Odinga, while unveiling his manifesto, promised to ban mitumba to empower local textile industries, sparking condemnation from William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza wing.

The Azimio leader while launching his manifesto said, “Our people are only wearing mitumba, clothes that are coming outside the country, that are worn by people who are dead. We are going to go to primary production so that our people who are importing mitumba can have good products to sell here, " said Raila.

The former Gatundu member of parliament was irked and said that Raila was out to kill small-scale business people in Kenya.

In a show of solidarity with Mitumba sellers, Kuria did a campaign tour in Gikomba where he shopped and promised the sellers that Kenya Kwanza will protect their businesses.

The vocal legislator bought a bra and undergarments in Gikomba as he interacted with the traders.

Ruto, then a presidential candidate, also castigated Odinga at that time accusing him of wanting to kill Mitumba industry.

Ruto then convened a meeting with Mitumba sellers at his former Karen residence and assured them of Kenya Kwanza support.

Is Kuria RaiRa Ruto all wearing mitumba but he wants your wife to wear a mitumba 'mothers union’for equity purposes?
unugu wa baafrigha

When RAO said the same thing they misquoted him and made it trend…well played.

Banning mitumba will only benefit china we will only experience real dumping of new clothes because,we don’t have that enabling environment for businesses to strive.starting from electricity, water, taxes and regulating agencies and offcourse corruption.

Amefanya.

Mtumba ziko sawa. For 100/- I can get a good tshirt that can last me years. Ukiwa na 2k, ukona tsho kadhaa, jinika zimeweza, hood mpaka hata njumu. Ukiwa mtaa unachapa luku ya gikosh unatesa kuruka.

Stupid peasant mbwa. Are you justifying why you should continue wearing mtush? If new clothes were made affordable huwezi vaa?

People like you ndio maana Kenya itaishi kubaki nyuma.

Baba has already been proven to have been right many times.

Hapo kwa affordability iko debatable msee. Wasianze hekaya za kuban mtush alafu wanaanza kuleta tsho zinauzwa 1000. But if they bring affordable clothes then i will dump mtush and go for them. The issue is affordability.

Ever asked yourself why people import second hand cars yet they can get them new zero mileage at our local show rooms. The answer is affordability. As long as wataleta nguo na haziko affordable people will still go for mtush. Jaribu kutumia akili kufikiria bro.

Every kid at school confiscates Raila lunch money

Hii phrase iko hilarious

Very mature and cool response.

Mitumba industry has truly evolved to serve the ever hungry masses.
Form a personal expe.
So sometimes back I have this good friend of mine, he’s originally from Chile, he goes back home to Chile on vacation and comes back with this freaking cool T shirt and khaki pants…bearing a Made in Kenya label! I am shocked, but also happy Kenya imefika hukooo…then I ask him how much he bought these goods, he gives me a price that is very affordable, maybe x 0.6 of what you would get a mtumba item at Gikomba. That got me thinking that the whole dumping of mitumbas in Kenya is making someone very rich but leaving Kenyans consuming second hand goods yet we have a capasity to produce similar first class products.

Mitumbas are originally made in China.

Nop! The first step kuria needs is support with in AU.
Museven cames handy.

Lobby cartels within north America and EU will threaten with all kind of sort etc etc on trade matters.
They are very powerful in lobbing.

If you look at the value chain of mitumba and the textile industry, you actually wonder why we even allowed them in the first place. Mitumba is responsible for de-industrializing Kenya.
