For those who think KPLC (insert other parastatal) is an organization full of bad luck, let me tell you for free. It ain’t.
Energy and Electricity supply in a lot of countries is so profitable that the government institutions venture abroad and /or have diversified their income streams mutilfold. Trumpistan is one place where these utility companies are private but they still make a kill like when Ted Cruz flew to Cancun recently.
KPLC as it stands is a cash cow to very high ranking individuals. If the servers were opened and books properly audited with no qualifications, we won’t be surprised just reassured what we know is true.
This one and KQ are labelled ‘too big to fail’ because after lube, the government goes around and pumps in more from the exchequer.
Ile clusterfucckery iko kenya hauwezi toa. Why did the government license private companies to supplement electricity to Kengen. Yet they frustrate private companies who will directly compete with Kplc in distribution of power. Hata safaricom can build a similar distribution system as kplc but the government can’t risk that.
KPLC, in terms of kuleta stima, and somehow reliable wako sawa.
Whether they incur losses or not in the process isn’t my problem. Hata wakimake profit siwezi tumiwa kakitu na stima.
Punda afe, but stima ifike ikiwa 230V, 50hz, PN. So far mzigo hufika kwangu reliably
A distribution system on what land??? Watu wamejenga hadi to the 6 meter line, ata Kenya Power lines pass right by people’s windows in most estates!!
Secondly, the fact is, Kenya Power’s monopoly was dissolved years ago, in 2016 actually. However, the cost of setting up a distribution system and profiting from it is near ,no , impossible in Kenya.
For starters, Kenya Power gets 70 percent of its revenue from Nairobi and Coast regions alone. The rest of the country contributes the rest. In essence, because private distribution companies cannot distribute in Nairobi( because there simply is no wayleave to distribute through), they have to contend with supplying the rest of the country ,which is an unprofitable venture. The rest of the country is simply not worth the expensive distribution equipment.I would have no interest in distributing in Muranga or Western Kenya niwe nashinda nikireplace transformers for a customer base that users 5 units a month.
Power generation is a relatively easy process to set up because it is basically akin to owning a giant generator. You do not have to worry about your product reaching the consumer as other agencies are tasked with that, so power generation, so long as you have the capital to set up on a large scale it is cheap and it is renewable(we stopped licensing thermal power plants and actually the aim is to shut them all down by 2032) it is a simple process. However, the auction system means the Government will only buy power from the cheapest sources first, so if you price high, like half the time your generator will be idle.
