Phase I - It already provides services -100%
The first phase of the project includes Morogoro roads (from Kimara to Kivukoni, Kimara Gerezani and Kimara Morocco on Kawawa road with a total length of 31.454 kilometers, Obama Drive including the entrance to the Kivukoni Bus Rapid Transit Terminal as well as roads connecting to Msimbazi road with a length of 3.055 kilometers.
Phase II - It already provides services - 100%
The second phase of the project includes Kilwa Road (from the city center to the Mbagala Rangitatu area), Sokoine Avenue (from Zanaki Street to Gerezani Roundabout), Gerezani Street (from Gerezani Roundabout to Kamata at the intersection of Nyerere and Msimbazi roads), Bandari Street (from Gerezani Roundabout to Bendera Tatu), Chang’ombe Road (from Jitegemee Roundabout to VETA at the intersection of Nyerere and Kawawa roads) and Kawawa South Road (from VETA at the intersection of Nyerere and Chang’ombe roads to Magomeni at the intersection of Kawawa and Morogoro roads) with a total of 20.3 kilometers. Road construction in this phase officially began in May, 2019, where by June 2024, construction had reached 99 percent with minor works remaining to install traffic lights. The phase also included the construction of buildings, including the construction of garages, the construction of main bus terminals, and the construction of food stations. The construction works, which began on March 1, 2019, have been 100 percent completed, and the projects have already been handed over to the Agency.
Phase III - 90% to Complete
The third phase of the project starts in the heart of Dar es Salaam City and includes Azikiwe and Maktaba streets, Bibi Titi and Nyerere roads through Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) to the Gongo la Mboto area. Another branch of phase 3 starts at the Kariakoo Gerezani Central Bus Terminal through Lindi, Shaurimoyo and Uhuru streets to Buguruni where it connects with Nelson Mandela road and joins Nyerere road at the TAZARA junction with a length of 23.6 kilometers connecting with Phases One and Two of the project at the Kariakoo - Gerezani and Kivukoni Central Bus Terminals. In phase three, construction includes exclusive BRT lanes, private roads, pedestrian and bicycle lanes with a total length of 23.6 kilometers; three (3) Central Bus Terminals; Thirty-two (32) Bus Stops, one (1) Bus Garage and three (3) Bus Stops. The construction of the third phase of the DART Project is being implemented with World Bank funding through the Dar es Salaam Urban Transport Improvement Project (DUTIP).
Phase IV - 50% to Complete
The fourth phase runs from the city center to Tegeta (Boko Basihaya), including Bibi Titi, Ali Hassan Mwinyi and Bagamoyo roads, and also has a branch from Mwenge to Ubungo via Sam Nujoma road, totaling 30.1 kilometers. The construction is being implemented with a soft loan from the World Bank through the Dar es Salaam Urban Transport Project (DUTP). The detailed engineering design of this project was carried out by Kunhwa Engineering & Consulting Co., LTD of South Korea in collaboration with AQGOLA Engineering & Management Services LTD of Tanzania. Construction contractors have already been found and construction contracts have been signed since 30 June 2023 and construction is progressing at a rapid pace. In addition, construction works in the fourth phase also include the expansion of the Salender bridge, the construction of 2 Main Stations, 20 Bus Stations, and 10 Food Stations. The construction is being implemented by the Contractor China Geo-Engineering Corporation from China.
Phase V - Under Procurement
The Fifth Phase of the Bus Rapid Transit Project will involve Nelson Mandela Road, Mbagala Road and Tabata-Segerea-Kigogo Road with a total length of 26.0 kilometers. The detailed design was carried out by Kunhwa Engineering & Consulting Co. Ltd of South Korea. In addition, the French Government through its AFD (French Development Agency) has provided a financial loan to finance the construction of the infrastructure of the Fifth Phase. A construction consultant has already been found, and now TANROADS in collaboration with the Agency have announced a tender for finding a construction contractor.
Phase VI - Under Design
Phase Six of the Bus Rapid Transit project will involve the Mwai Kibaki road, and the extension of Phase One from Kimara Mwisho to Kibaha and the extension of Phase Two from Mbagala Rangi Tatu to Vikindu with a length of 33.5 kilometers. The Agency is currently continuing with the steps to raise funds for the detailed design and construction of the infrastructure, where the Agency in collaboration with CRDB Bank PLC, has already submitted a document to the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Secretariat, requesting funding to implement the project.
