Kenyan writer Makena Onjerika was yesterday announced winner of the 2018 Caine Prize for African Writing for her short story “Fanta Blackcurrant”,.
Sadly, previous Kenyan winners of the prize have not turned out to be prolific writers. Binyavanga won the prize in 2002 but has only published a memoir so far but no novel.
Yvonne Owuor won in 2003 but has only published one novel to date to mixed reviews. Okwiri Oduor was another Kenyan who won in 2014.
By comparison, novelist Alain Mabancou from the DRC (not a winner of the Caine Prize) has published 11 novels since 1998.
So is the Caine Prize a curse or blessing?

PS: *Admins, it has been proposed by many that we have a books forum. Hekayas about hookers are interesting as a form of urban literature, but we’re yearning for more.
TLS is hugely talented. His hekayas are short, fast paced and packed with action, hilarious and relatable. I still laugh about the double decker one. I don’t think he recognises his talent. He won best hekayarist 2017.
Words fail me when it comes to this one. They are concoted in all of 10 minutes. He is very funny and the flow wacha tuu. Talent gunia mzima. A lot of different activities and a bit of sex is what does it for me. Each time I go back to re-read I find something else and I lol.
