I have always wondered how difficult is it to have another power distributor company in kenya?
This monopoly by Kenya power imepitwa na wakati, it seems to be the only govt fossil monopoly entity left.
Are there personal interests involved?
His mom is the greatest shareholder there. His key allies, relatives and friends are tenderpreneurs there as well
Sir, there will never be another power company in Kenya. If in doubt, read about why the established state corporations at independence.
si useme tu vile unataka kusema una masquerade nini?
please elaborate
There are many power companies in Kenya. Only that Kenyans are ignorant. Tea companies in central generate their own power without help from KPLC. We just have to find a framework that allows sharing of lines in densely populated areas like Nairobi. If we have managed to remove Kengen as the sole power generator then we can do the same for KPLC country-wide.
Hydro electric or what do they use to generate their power?
Yes they are called mini hydro plants.
That’s awesome, incredibly genius. Do they have to get a permit from KPLC or so… to produce it? Or do they pay some tax/levies/licence to do so?
Hapana, kplc is only a player like any other in the energy sector. The person to license them is Energy Regulatory Authority (ERC). Then they have to get approvals from WARMA and NEMA. The ones I’ve seen in Nyeri, Murang’a and Embu do not have to build conveyance infrastructure but feed their production to KP lines. KP, which serves their factories, compares consuption (by the factories) against what they hydro’s have fed into the grid and pays for the net as bulk power at a price determined by ERC.
Solar is the next alternative source… Nilicheki Chinese wakiwa in initial stage ya solar project pale kitui…very big project
Do they supply that power to households nearby? Like to say if I am in need, can they connect my house to their electricity supply if I was their neighbour?
They are not licensed to retail. There’s only one licensed retailer.
Hapa utasumbuliwa hadi ulie.
Necessity is the mother of invention. I never thought much about solar energy until I built deep in laikipia. Now I wish I had installed solar when I lived in the garbage capital. I never think of KPLC.
How much did you invest in your solar setup?
It was about 150k.
You cud also get good power at around 80k from chloride exide. They have maintenance- free batteries and it’s easy to install.
Do you have any heavy power users like water pumps, instant shower or a large fridge?
Nope. I have a generator for those though I rarely use it. I found I have very little use for a freezer since I left nairobi. Everything is fresh from the farm.
