Uganda recently clinched an investment deal with Alpha MBM of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to construct a 60,000 barrels per day refinery. The $4 billion refinery shareholding will be 60 percent by the UAE investor and 40 percent by Uganda government entities. If successful, this project will be game-changing for Uganda.

All nine turbines at the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP), collectively generating 2,115 megawatts, are now fully operational. This will double Tanzania’s power generation capacity, making it the largest electricity producer in the region. This project’s capacity is equivalent to 64% of Kenya’s installed electricity generation capacity, which stood at 3,300 MW in December 2024.

In the last 12 years, we have borrowed KSh 9 trillion with little to show for it. If we are not careful, we will lose our status as the leading economy in EAC. We won’t achieve much without affordable energy. Soon, we will be importing oil from Uganda and power from Tanzania.
