Kirinyaga East police boss Anthony Wanjuu said Njuki would face murder charges after investigations are completed.
“We have commenced investigations and soon the man, who is well known in the village, will be arraigned in court to face capital charges,” he said.
Neighbours said the assailant allegedly became violent when his wife, Millicent Muthoni, 38, attempted to stop him from defiling their underage daughter.
They said he took an axe and struck her dead before turning to the innocent children, aged between one and thirteen years, and butchering them in cold blood, one after the other.
The children, two boys and two girls, pleaded to their father to spare their lives but their pleas fell on deaf ears as he continued hacking them with the weapon.
Neighbours responding to the distress calls found the victims lying in pools of blood and sounded the alarm, attracting scores of residents, who searched for the assailant but could not find him.
“The residents were furious and wanted to lynch the suspect but luckily he had escaped,” one of the residents said.
Immediately after the murders police drove to the scene and took the bodies to the Kerugoya Referral Hospital mortuary.
As the bodies were being taken away, relatives were overwhelmed with emotions and wept uncontrollably.

A relative, Patrick Njiru, said he learnt of the fatal attacks with great shock. “I was at home when I was informed that my sister and his four children had been brutally eliminated. I hurriedly went to the scene only to be met by dead bodies,” he said.
Mr Njiru described the attack as inhuman, adding that the assailant should not go unpunished.
Mr Ndambiri Muchira, a resident, said the incident was the most serious of its kind to have happened in the area.
“This is the first incident of this nature to occur in this village and we are baffled,” he said.

Detectives escort murder suspect Paul Murage Njuki, 35, out of a court in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County on December 1, 2021. He will be remanded until December 15, 2021 as police conclude investigations.

Investigators will also have sufficient time to take the suspect, Paul Murage Njuki, 35, to hospital for medical check-up to establish his mental status and collect DNA samples from him to assist in the investigations.
The suspect was locked up following an application by one of the investigating officers, Lazarus Kiprop, who informed the court on Wednesday that they were yet to conclude investigations into the killings.
Further, Mr Kiprop said they required more time to record statements from prosecution witnesses and arrest more suspects in connection with the gruesome murders.
He narrated how he and his colleagues visited the scene and found the victims dead in their beds. One of the victims, aged 13 years, had been defiled.
Principal Magistrate Leah Kabaria ordered the suspect be remanded at Kianyaga Police Station until December 15 when she will give further directions.
In response, the suspect said he had no objection to the application by the investigating officer.
Earlier, the case was adjourned after the suspect told the court that he was unwell.
Mr Njuki could not take plea as he informed the court that he was sick and required to be treated first.
Immediately Mr Njuki entered the court room under tight security, he raised his hand saying he was having stomach pains and that he could not answer to any charges while he was unwell.
As he shivered, he asked that he be permitted to seek treatment.
Consequently, the magistrate ordered that the suspect be taken to the nearest hospital for treatment and brought back to court in the afternoon.

He is said to have become violent when his wife, Millicent Muthoni, 38, attempted to block him from defiling their underage daughter.
He took an axe and struck his wife dead and then turned to the innocent children aged between one and 13 years and butchered them in cold blood. The children, two boys and two girls pleaded to have their lives spared but their pleas fell on deaf ears as their father continued cutting them up with the weapon.
The children, Nelly Wawira 13, Gibson Bundi, 5, Wambui Murage, 3, and Clifton Njuki, 1, were heard calling out for help before they suddenly went silent.

As the bodies were being taken away, relatives were overwhelmed by emotions and wept uncontrollably and they had to be assisted by sympathizers.
Kirinyaga East Police Commander Anthony Wanjuu said it appeared as if one of the slain girls had been sexually abused, adding that the matter was being investigated.

Residents of Kithima village in Kirinyaga County are reeling in shock following an incident where a man hacked his wife to death and then set her body ablaze.

The victim, Charity Wangui, 37, is said to have died on the spot after her husband allegedly chopped off her hands on Sunday evening.
According to the witnesses, the man picked up a quarrel with his wife over unknown reasons. The quarrel degenerated into a physical fight and it was then that the man took a panga and slashed Ms Wangui to death before he threw her body into a timber house and torched it.

“We are still shocked over the fatal attack," one of the residents, Newton Kariuki, said.
Mr Kariuki, who is also a member of Nyumba Kumi, said that he heard screams while on his way home and rushed to the scene, only to find the woman dead inside the burnt building.
“The smoke was emanating from the house while the body of the victim lay there. Upon enquiring what was happening, I was told that the man set ablaze his house while his slain wife was inside. The two had a bitter quarrel before a fight which left Wangui dead,” he said.

Following the brutal attack, police swung into action and arrested the suspect and locked him up at Kianyaga Police Station for questioning.
A senior detective, Millicent Ochuka, said investigations into the matter and been commenced.
“We would like to know why the assailant killed his wife," she said.
Ms Ochuka said the suspect will face a murder charge after investigations are complete.
Ngariama MCA Erastus Ireri condemned the incident and told the police to get to the bottom of the matter.
He said the couple had two children who luckily were absent when the incident happened.

Mr Ireri regretted over the high number of domestic violence cases in his ward as barely a week ago, a sub-chiefs met his death in a fight with his wife.
He advised couples to resolve their disputes amicably rather than taking the law into their own hands.
“If you are experiencing difficulties in your marriage, the solution is not to take the law into your own hands by killing your partner. Look for ways you can resolve your differences,” he advised.
