Ex parte means a court order that has been/can be granted without waiting for a response from the other side to the dispute. It also refers to an application to a court in which the other party/parties to the legal dispute do not need to be/have not been heard.
An example would be urgent temporary court orders which are only in place until further hearings can be held. The order barring Mwilu from acting as Chief Justice was temporary and was issued by the court ex parte. Mwilu had not/has not been given a chance to be heard, yet.
