Kenya and Rwanda sign the EAC-EU-EPA trade agreement

Kenya and Rwanda have today signed the EAC-EU EPA agreement in Brussels, Belgium. It may not be the best but far much better with the previous agreement. It also open the door for easier amendments and renegotiations in the future. All Kenya exports will continue to get 0% tax in the EU.

@spear 2nd pic, why is that jamaa peeping? ama he thinks the guy will have second thoughts about signing :smiley:

He…he, relax its good. Kenya elevated trade diplomacy sorted this issue at the sidelines of TICAD. The E.U officials agreed that come what may on 30th September 2016 whether Uganda and Tz sign or not, Kenya and Rwanda business with EU will not be affected.

Screw the EAC all together. Tz has never been for integration, they’re just trying to recoup the supposed monies and assets that they lost in the initial union while Ug is in it for political posturing where M7 hopes to become the regions first president

EAC political federation was dead on arrival. We don’t have a unified constitution and i don’t expect Tz and Ug to give up their imperial presidency like us to one of shared power between legislature-judiciary-independent constitutional bodies. Another reason is that Africa is uniting around AU now more than smaller regional bodies. The current push is in integrated trade agreements between almost all African countries. That needs infrastructure upgrades and linkage being undertaken by mostly China and now Japan and India are trying to get into the mix. The agreements will provide the integrated legal laws and list of goods that can freely pass through borders and those that are charged or restricted all together.

The devil is in the details.

Meanwhile, some ignorant Kenyan journalist cannot suppress his glee at Magufool’s stupid antics borne of shortsightedness and malice:

President John Magufuli hurts Kenya with radical policies

…Although Kenya’s Foreign Affairs ministry says that all is well, it is fighting growing diplomatic tension with its neighbour behind the scenes, even as an isolated Kenya starts to chart its own path in the region.

When 36 heads of state gather in Nairobi, 10,000 delegates populate our hotels and trillions in FDI, loans and grants are negotiated, is that ‘isolation’? When one boycotts such an event and delights in his imagined victory, isn’t he the isolated fool?

What is this EPA that Kenya is fighting neck and tooth to sign? Sounds like a doping drug so far…

Tanzania were hoping that October 1 deadline would pass - seeing as they would not have been affected.

I think the EAC should just be left to die because as it is, we do not have similar interests with our neighbouring countries.

Kaboom, Uganda has confirmed it will sign as well. Tz now isolates itself.

@spear explain this priss

That was the case but President Uhuru and Amb Amina had a meeting with the EU delegations at the sidelines of TICAD where it was communicated to them that EU doesn’t want a trade disruption with us and the region and it will hold back taxing our products even if the deadline passes. Most likely it can be amended to be signed by individual nations or with some special consideration. When China-Japan-India trade is booming, they don’t want to be completely replaced. That is why CS Mohammed left immediately after TICAD to Brussels to seal this reassurance.
