The Swahili houses you see in Mombasa are not actually slums. They are lower middle class areas. Like Githurai, Huruma, Kayole, Pipeline e.t.c. It is just that rather than building the gorofas (the Nairobi low cost gorofas that are prone to collapsing), Mombasa people build Swahili houses. But some of the neighborhoods made out of Swahili houses are quite decent. And when you enter into these Swahili houses, you realize that the people living there are actually leading quite decent lives - lower middle-class lives. Of course, Mombasa does have its own genuine slums: places like Muoroto e.t.c. But it is a complicated city. Mombasa is a different kind of city. It is like Lagos.
