By MARGARET NJUGUNAH, NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 4 – The Japanese Government has extended a Sh2.4 billion grant to Kenya to fund the dualling of the Prestige Plaza-Dagoretti Corner Section of the Ngong Road.
Japanese Ambassador to Kenya Toshitsugu Uesawa says the funds will finance the 3.4 km expansion of the Ngong Road from Ring Road Kilimani to the Dagoretti Corner Junction. The project for dualling the road started in 2012 when the two governments signed a Sh1.4 billion grant to finance the expansion of the 2.57 km Ngong Road from the National Library Area to Ring Road Kilimani, which is still under construction.

“In total, the grant assistance for the entire project amounts to Sh3.9 billion,” Uesawa said.

National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich said that the project would go a long way in reducing the road transport costs within the Nairobi Metropolitan Region, and shorten travel time during peak hours.

“It will also create security, safety and convenience, as well as decongest the surrounding roads and improve the accessibility of logistics and living environment,” Rotich said.

The funds are part of the Sh14.6 billion received from the Japanese government to fund different projects in the country. Other projects set to benefit from the total funds include the Mombasa Port Area Road Development project – Sh11.8 billion – and the purchase of patrol motor boats at Sh273 million.

“The purchase of Patrol Motor Boats through the grant will be utilised by the country’s Maritime Police Unit to enhance security between Kenya and the Somali coastline as well as patrolling Kenya’s coastline to combat drug trafficking and contraband goods,” Rotich added.
