In Mombasa, the access road is in its completion phase and thus is expected to provide a fluid road connection to the Miritini Station from Mombasa City.

By KENNEDY KANGETHE, NAIROBI, Kenya, June 7 – The newly launched Madaraka Express has ferried about 7, 000 customers, one week since launch. Kenya Railways management says the demand will see the corporation schedule additional trains to handle more passengers.

“With demand for our services at an all-time high, we are looking forward to scheduling additional trains. The combination of state-of-the-art design, unrivaled comfort and convenience means that we are well placed to meet the growing demand as passengers increasingly opt for our services over other existing means,” explained Kenya Railways Managing Director Atanus Maina.

The first phase of the Standard Gauge Rail service, which was launched by President Kenyatta last Wednesday, is currently operating with scheduled passenger trains from Nairobi and Mombasa running on a daily basis. Sunday had the largest bookings of over 1300 with a capacity of 1200.

“Over the last week, we have experienced a daily surge in passenger numbers. The growing numbers demonstrate the vital role Kenya Railways plays in our nation’s transportation system; we are definitely off to a strong start,” Maina noted.

He said plans are also underway to introduce the Intercounty trains that will make stops in Athi River, Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito, Voi, Miasenyi and Mariakani before the final stop at Miritini in July.

“Without a doubt, we have many passengers who intend to ply their businesses across the five counties that the line traverses and this new train will ensure that we play our role in devolution by connecting businesses across the counties”, Maina said. The company has also announced a partnership with National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to enable private bus operators to provide last mile services to and from the various destinations along the route. In Mombasa, the access road is in its completion phase and thus is expected to provide a fluid road connection to the Miritini Station from Mombasa City. On the Nairobi side, the Nairobi Commuter Rail service to Syokimau Station is available in the morning to take the passengers to the Nairobi Terminus before the 9am train departs. The service is also available in the afternoon to pick passengers arriving from Mombasa and drop them to the city center.

“We will continue to enhance the customer experience and optimize our services through continuous improvement of our internal systems such as retraining staff on service delivery,” concluded Maina.

For the passenger project to be successful KR needs to get the following things right
[ol]
[li]communication and marketing[/li][li]ticketing[/li][li]on board services (catering and cleaning)[/li][li]transfers to and from stations[/li][/ol]

7K in 14 trains? Sounds like 40% occupancy.

The face me seats hazibambi kwanza kama unatravel na msupa wako akiwa amevaa mini alafu opposite ni mafisi wameketi wanakula vitu zako na macho tu

shows how hungry Kenyans were for functional trains

Communication and Marketing is at tendering stage. Remember the first 6 months is a trial, train and job experience phase.

Online ticketing design is nearly complete. What’s been done is testing it.

Like I mentioned above the catering company has already been picked and they are training on the coaches to see how they will roll out fully in a few weeks.

The roads leading to Nairobi and Mombasa station are almost complete including signage. Transfers by NYS buses have ended in favour of the private sector. Matatu Sacco’s are ready to start once a designated drop point is agreed and how they will line up. There is no difference of driving to JKIA and Nairobi SGR Terminal buy private car owners.

Phase 2A/B includes build a commuter train service in Nairobi and Mombasa cities to link the Terminals and various transport hubs in the city. Two obstacles remain. KR & CCCC are seeking a law review to see whether the order by the court to halt construction on those phases also include commuter trains project in Mombasa and Nairobi. Namata has been operationalized in Nairobi and once they get an office and staff is crucial. They need to be part and parcel of the entire master plan of mass transport systems in Nairobi. Phase 2A Nairobi-Naivasha construction is to be officially flagged off on 1st July 2017. Phase 2B Naivasha to Kisumu is to be flagged off in Oct 2017. Funding for both is ready. Court will make final route decision before then. The designs are ready and NLC is finalizing on land acquisition.

Remember SGR Madaraka Express is 18 months ahead of schedule and this is the hiccups of trial periods that came way ahead of schedule.

ata mimi naenda mombasa over the coming next weekend.

Leta rink tuchafue nayo mecho

Not all the trains are in use.The station to station ones especially

these are the 3K-a-seat carriages?

hehe this is a very good deal

What they don’t tell you is that hiyo 4be ni KC & keg, uki fikiria ni akina Jameson, Remi Martin pole sana

This is so cheap to be true.

They took me to Maasai Mara, Salt licks, Lake Bogoria etc. They are legit. Remember not all hotels are full all the time so they rely on such tour firms to bring guests enmass at budget price. I.e if you bring 10 guests at 3000 each a day, thats 30,000 a day for the hotel which is better than nothing. On those days we were 20 guests so they made 120,000 for those two days minimum.

uki safiri low season you can sample Kenya on a very lean budget till you will feel like a conman.
