The first ship is set to dock at the Lamu Port by November this year, official have said, confirming Kenya’s ambition to have to functional sea ports this year. The officials said the first berth at the new Lamu Port South Sudan Ethiopia Transport (Lapsset) Corridor project will be ready by the end of June. The Sh2.5 trillion Lapsset project is being set up at Kililana in Lamu West with the construction of the first three berths at the site being over 70 percent complete.
The State is set to build the first three of the 32-berth facility at a cost Sh48 billion. The two other berths as expected to be complete by the end of 2020. Speaking when he toured the port site in Kililana, Lapsset chairman Titus Ibui, who was accompanied by other Lapsset board officials, said the government is committed to ensuring the upcoming Lamu Port is delivered on time.
Mr Ibui said enough money has been allocated to the Lapsset project to speed up the completion of the last phase of first berth as well as kick start construction of the second and third berths. He also commissioned another block of modern police quarters assigned to the Lapsset.

What is a berth?
Is is that thin strip of concrete?

And the treasury is 100% funded by China and lies

Good job HE Uhuru kenyatta deni tunajua ni ya china

Rudimentary yes, a berth is an allocated section at the port where a ship docks inorder to offload or load cargo. They vary in size but for Lamu they are big and deep to handle modern mega ships.

Looks like construction has slowed considerably. It’s not moving as the pace from earlier…

Curing cement takes more time than shifting sand. You have to wait for it to dry properly. No shortcuts. Another dredger is on it was to help with the backfill of sand at the container terminal area behind the berths.

How ambitious is building 32 berths ?

Very.

But seriously, the payoff for all these investments is generations removed from us.

You see the thin grey strips of concrete in the 2nd picture, that’s the length of one berth. Now compare that with the small ship on opposite side of that picture and imagine the size of one ship taking up the entire length of that strip of concrete.

Hapo kwa cement (I hope u mean concrete) umeanguka Kiasi. Even though concrete continues to gain strength over a long duration of its life, at 28 days it has already gained the strength used in design…

I think they pour it section by section and await 28 days to set. Otherwise they would have poured the entire length of 1Km already. I don’t know the thickness of the pour up to the base in the ocean. Looks like 10 meters. Can anyone clarify that? Away its cumbersome work.
