The price of this year’s subsidised fertiliser has been reduced by 33.3 per cent, Agriculture Principal Secretary Richard Lesiyampe revealed yesterday. The PS confirmed that Government will sell planting fertiliser to more than two million small-scale farmers currently under the subsidised programme at Sh1, 200 down from last year’s price of sh1, 800 per 50 kilogramme bag.
Lesiyampe said the Government has procured 100,000 tonnes of calcium ammonium nitrate (Can) fertiliser which is currently being transported from the port of Mombasa to National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots countrywide.
“We have received up to 100,000 metric tonnes that will be distributed to farmers for the coming long rains season expected to start mid next month,” said Lesiyampe. The consignment will be sold to farmers registered under the e-voucher registration programme. NCPB management yesterday confirmed that it has 1.4 million bags of assorted fertiliser which is retailing at Sh1, 800 per 50 kilogramme bag.
“However, with new consignment pricing will depend on government’s directive,” said a senior office at the NCPB. Of the total fertiliser used in the country by small-scale farmers, government under the subsidised fertiliser programme provides between 25 and 30 per cent.
“Farmers use about 600,000 tonnes annually equivalent to 12 million bags. Two thirds which is about 450,000 tonnes is supplied by the private sector while the government subsidy is below one third,” he said.
He added: “We are hopeful the uptake of the fertiliser by farmers will increase in addition to proper and timely application so that we can achieve increased food production.” Farmers, especially in the North Rift, have been calling upon the national government to make adequate subsidised fertiliser available on time and at affordable prices
