LINK ROAD {MOMBASA PORT AREA ROAD DEVELOPMENT PROJECT PACKAGE I} ALMOST COMPLETE
In May 2015, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) with the support of Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) embarked on the construction of Miritini – Kipevu New Container Link Road approximately 11.4 Km.
The road project is package one (I) of Mombasa Port Area Road Development Project (MPARD) also known as the Dongo Kundu Bypass. The project road is predominantly situated in Mombasa County with sections traversing Kwale and Kilifi Counties.
The new link road to Kipevu Container Terminal is a dual carriageway and starts at Miritini along the Mombasa – Nairobi (A8) Highway, 22 km from Mombasa.
The newly constructed road runs in a southerly direction through Mwache junction, approximately 5.6 km and turns eastwards along the coastline to the New Port Terminal at Kipevu. An access road to the Moi International Airport has also been constructed to facilitate ease access to the Bypass from the Airport.
KEY FEATURES ALONG THE MIRITNI – KIPEVU CONTAINER TERMINAL SECTION (PACKAGE I)
•Dual carriageway 11.4km in length from Miritini to Kipevu
•Modern Grade Separated Interchanges at Miritini and Mwache
•Three main Bridges
•An access road to Moi International Airport, 1.3Km in length and construction of Airport road interchange
•Construction of Miritini U-turn bay
•Construction of weighbridge station and installation of a High-Speed-Weigh-In-Motion System and a parking bay
•Construction of Mkupe Jetty Road
•Construction of a U-Turn bay providing enhanced connection to Mombasa SGR Terminus station
•Construction of Railway bridge and realignment of the old railway line at Miritini
•Construction of Shelter at the airport and installation of CCTVs
EXPECTED ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF THE PROJECT
•The Dongo Kundu bypass will revolutionize the tourism sector in the South Coast by providing easy accessibility to the hotels and lodges in the region
•The bypass will link Likoni and join the Nairobi – Mombasa highway directly
•The bypass will pass through the proposed Dongo Kundu Free Trade Zone, which will create massive employment opportunities to the local communities as well as to the country in general
•The bypass will enhance regional integration and cross border trade by providing easy access to the Port of Mombasa and easy evacuation services from the Port
•The bypass will decongest Mombasa County and the Coast region
Package II & III
PACKAGE II - MWACHE INTERCHANGE TO DONGO KUNDU (MWANGALA)
The project road is situated in Mombasa and Kwale Counties. It starts at Mwache Interchange at the intersection with the package I and terminates at Dongo Kundu (Mwangala) on the southern mainland.

The new road will consist of a dual carriageway starting from the Mwache interchange, 4km from the Mombasa – Nairobi Highway and 5km from the New Container terminal at Kipevu, Mombasa Port. The road runs in a southerly direction from the Mwache interchange for 4.0km crossing the Mwache Creek through Tzunza peninsula before turning eastwards across the Bombo and Mteza Creek. The total length of the package II project road measures 8.96km.
Package III- Dongo Kundu to A14 junction (Kibundani)
The project road is situated in Mombasa and Kwale Counties. It starts at the end of the Mteza Bridge approach of the Dongo kundu (Mwangala) where it intersects with the package II and terminates at A14 junction (Kibundani) on the southern mainland. The total length of the package III project road measures 6.86km.
Works for package II & III is expected to commence soon. Once complete, the bypass will connect the Nairobi - Mombasa highway to South Coast at Kibundani along the Likoni – LungaLunga Highway.

This one picture sums this project up. They literary had to curve around a rocky hill to build the dual bypass road. 30 billion well spent. Now let’s await the lane markings. One of my favorite Jubilee projects.

You say that Ksh30 billion of our tax money was “spent”. Do you have any idea how much of it was eaten in the process?

I don’t. But assuming the common trends of recent days, eg
“Kenya is planning to import the high capacity buses yet Tanzania, which initially imported buses from China, has turned to us to use our 70-year plus experience to build them the buses,” said Mr Maundu who doubles as the Kenya Bus Body Builders Association chairman.
He said Kenya’s plan to import fully built units negated the Jubilee government’s Big Four Agenda, especially the manufacturing pillar, where the government pledged to provide incentives to support local companies in a bid to generate jobs, revenue and hence higher taxes.
Kenya will pay Ksh500 million ($4.9 million) to import 30 buses, effectively exporting jobs to the more advanced economy.
