Casual workers for a Chinese company
renovating Kipchoge Keino Stadium in
Eldoret have complained about physical
and verbal harassment by their Chinese
supervisors. One labourer, Moses Makitare, said
some of the Chinese employees of
Weihai International Construction
Engineering Company were physically
assaulting Kenyan workers.
You cannot bite the hand that literally feeds you.You beat himup. The next day, you are out of a job which has zero security as millions are willing to do that construction job and ignore the verbal abuse.
There are things as a man you should never take. Being physically assaulted is no.1 on that list. No man is punching or slapping me and getting away with it! I don’t care if you are the President of Earth or the Pope. The day your father stopped laying a hand on you is the day you became a man. You can’t be a man and be someone’s bitch. Forget it!
The same issue has been on my mind since the SGR was inaugurated. read a story of a Chinese woman who wouldnt pay coz she knew the builders. Then read the story of the guy who said that kenyans are many and desperate for jobs. The minute we started outsourcing these jobs was the source of our misery and until we build our local content there is no getting away from it. What happened to the civil engineers that we so dutifully sent out to majuu to study? how comes a bridge in Sigiri or wherever has to be build by the chinese? All those people that went to sturdythose “Great professions”, what happened to them, some of them came back for easy money and developed big tummies and that was the end of it.
No disrespect to the man but Raila is a civil engineer, he has tonnes of money, how many bridges has he build? how many civil engineers has he under his wing?
I could go on but we need to get our shit together, no one else will. too bad we wasted the 90s and the 00s
I think we wasted he 80s, 90s and 00s. Not many people went out to study civil Engineering, I donno why. And one thing is bridges and railways have been constructed since the 1800s. Wonder why locally trained engineers cant do same thing 150 years later. And we argue that we have some of the best education in the world. And Raila is a Mechanical Engineer with a Graduate Degree. Although on Ktalk you will come under fire to prove this ( it is said he studied at a teachers polytechnic- that has since shut down).
There’s lots at play here. One is experience, we have none to build bridges and interchanges and highways. I know of a French company called Vinci building Highways in Canada, the same company has just sent their guys here to do some consultancy. That’s globalization for you. Transfer of skills is the key here then we can build in Tanzania and Uganda…those chinku have to do it one way or another. In their country the CEOs kneel down and hold placards for non performance.
Experience is important. Also I think that we need to greatly improve our standards in engineering. In the poor construction of roads and buildings ( that collapse) contracts given to locals, the professionals responsible (civil engineers and contractors) need to be punished from jail terms to loosing licenses to practice their trade.
Hi,
I thought Raila was trained in East Germany as an Engineer!! I stand to be corrected.
Of course Raila doesn’t have to build one out of his pocket, how any contracts does he have that build any thing engineering?
When we say the Chinese are building stuff in our country, they are contracted to do so coz we lack the capacity. My point is that, we stuffed up our chance to move our people forward, our top brains have moved to positions that aren’t helping us.
And just because you don’t like what i post you don’t have to call names. lets be civil about stuff.
Simiyu i agree with you, as it stands today I wouldnt give a local contractor a kilometre to build. and who is local contractor anyway? Mehta is Indian, Young isnt either, and giving the small contractors are overpriced and do a shoddy job trying to make a killing.
the best model would have been to build capacity using the NYS but we all know how that went. so in short, we fuck ourselves up every opportunity we get.
reminds me of mugoya heydays, there was this israeli foreman who was very fond of abusing fundis, one day he unleashed his matusi towards one, the fellow picked up a grinder and fired it up and charged towards the israeli, mjamaa alianguka chini na kupiga magoti crying and begging the guy who was now speaking in mother tongue with eyes wide open,it took the intervention of other fundis to calm him down, matusi iliishia hapo and they became best buddies for the reminder of construction period.
