President Kenyatta honours Kenya’s elite athletes with Shs 181 million cash award

NAIROBI, 31 May 2019, (PSCU) — President Uhuru Kenyatta today at State House, Nairobi witnessed the disbursement of over Shs 181 million to Kenya’s elite athletes, to complete a process of compensating the champions since 2010.

A total of 3,338 athletes received their cash awards for participating in 32 international sporting events covering Olympics, Commonwealth Games, World Championships and the World Under 18 and Under 20 junior competitions.

The money to compensate the athletes was drawn from the National Sports Fund.

Besides the prize money, the President gave the athletes an additional Shs 2 million token of appreciation.

World beaters Geoffrey Kamworor (the world half marathon champion), Beatrice Chepkoech (world steeplechase record holder) and Alphas Kishoyian (400m gold medallist) received the cheque on behalf of their colleagues, some of whom are out of the country for international competitions.

President Kenyatta gave the Ministry of Sports three months to come up with a practical compensation policy for athletes who “bring pride and glory” to the country through their stellar performances in international competitions.

“Moving forward, I am directing the Ministry to formulate a realistic compensation policy for all athletes and launch it within 3 months,” said President Kenyatta.

The President further directed that all Kenyan sportsmen going for international competitions must be fully catered for before departing the country.

Through the National Sports Fund, the President reiterated that all sportsmen representing the country in international tournaments will be fully facilitated covering provision of kits, tickets, accommodation and allowances.

On Thursday, the Head of State hosted Harambee Stars, at State House, Nairobi before their departure for training and friendly matches in France ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

President Kenyatta congratulated the Ministry of Sports for ensuring that the national football team received the over Shs 244 million they needed to facilitate AFCON preparations.

The President said Kenya should never again suffer the embarrassment and shame of its high achieving sportsmen being stranded at international airports for lack of money.

He said sportsmen and women should receive their reward money immediately upon return when handing back the Kenyan flag, which they normally receive from the Head of State before departure.

President Kenyatta said the issue of compensation for athletes had bothered him for a long time.

“Whenever we hand over the flag to you before you depart for international competitions, we make promises to reward you, but when you return, there is nothing. But now under the National Sports Fund, there is something for you when you return,” the President said.

The President said only men and women of integrity will be allowed to manage the National Sports Fund and thanked the current board among them former Vice President Moody Awori for ensuring that all resources are put to good use.

The ceremony was attended by over 140 athletics stakeholders led by Sports CS Amina Mohammed.

Others were elite athletes and officials of Athletics Kenya led by their President Lt General (Rtd) Jackson Tuwei who doubles up as chairman of the National Sports Fund.

this country will be run down by the time this people gets out of office

Ile …loan world bank ya juzi 75B iliingiana…time to dish some

Mambo ya ku award watu pesa angewachia WSR, our DP is very generous when it comes to dishing out mulla. Leo headline zinge read 180 million each

54K kila mtu plus kshs599 kutoka kwa rais mtukufu

Honestly i don’t trust Uhuru’s directives. He’s given many of them with nothing to show.

But at least finally the athletes have received something. I hope they ACTUALLY LEFT WITH CASH, and not a photo op and a dummy cheque.

That cheque is obviously a dummy for the photos ops. However all the athletes got the money wired directly to their accounts from the sports funds account. That will be the norm from now on. You represent the nation you get paid. You just don’t receive the flag alone.

is that payment due from 2010, ama nimesoma zangu

Prediction: 75% will be chomped by officials. Can Uhuru learn to follow up after a generous gesture to ensure that the intended recipients are not robbed?

someone here called him a poor administrator/supervisor so his learning curve is a kidogo steep

That was me. Too trusting. KGB mantra was best, trust but verify. However we have all learned that giving funds to federation for distribution is a disaster. Their accounts are negative with huge loans. You send money there you can lose half of it to the bank instantly. So the federation must provide its current statement and the breakdown of the costs. All beneficiaries must be named and their own account numbers indicated. What’s meant for federation is given to them, what’s meant for individuals is sent by direct transfer directly to their accounts. Hawataki cases.

The sports funds was operationalized this week and so payments have just started.

Harambee Stars got 244 million for Afcon preparations. The federation got its own funds separately and players got their own directly into their account. Now all they need is to train well and focus on the tournament. Bills have been sorted.

Represent the country well, the President tells Harambee Stars

NAIROBI, 30th May 2019, (PSCU) —President Uhuru Kenyatta has today told Harambee Stars players to always be at their best and to ensure they represent the country well while in Egypt for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

The President spoke when he flagged off the team at State House, Nairobi ahead of the continental championship which will to be held between June 21st and July 19th.

While handing the national flag to the team, President Kenyatta told the players and the technical team to be good ambassadors for the country even if they do not win the finals.

"It is not about winning but giving your best. That is the most important thing. You are out there flying the Kenyan flag,” said the President.

The team which leaves the country tonight, will be based at Marcoussis, south of Paris where they will pitch their training camp.

During their stay in France, Harambee Stars will play two friendly matches against Madagascar and DRC Congo before heading out to Cairo for the games.

It is the first time in 15 years that Harambee Stars is participating in the biannual event. The team was last at the championship in 2004.

Harambee Stars coach Sebastian Migne thanked President Kenyatta for ensuring that the team received full support through the National Sports Fund.

“We endeavour to represent the country well. Thank you for your support,” said the coach who leads a 27-member team for the tournament in Egypt.

Fourteen of the players are already in Europe.

President Kenyatta assured the team of continued support saying Kenya’s comeback to the continental tournament marks an important milestone for the country.

“A journey begins with a single step. The sports fund is the first step in ensuring that all our national teams are properly funded and supported,” said the President.

Kenya will play its first game against Algeria on June 23rd before facing neighbours Taifa Stars of Tanzania on June 27th followed by Senegal on July 1st.

Before qualifying for the championship, Harambee Stars played return matches against Sierra Leone, Ghana and Ethiopia finishing 2nd in qualification group C.

Sports , Culture and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Ambassador Amina Mohamed who accompanied the team to State House said her ministry had disbursed over Shs 244 million to Football Kenya Federation to facilitate AFCON preparations.

Kenya’s qualification and participation in AFCON is a major milestone for the country whose sports profile is on the rise.

The Kenya Rugby Junior team has already qualified for the World Rugby Trophy slated for July in Brazil while “Malkia Strikers”, the National Women Volleyball team, recently qualified unbeaten for the 2019 Africa Games to be held in Rabat, Morocco.
