Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) has been ranked as the best airport in Africa and 38th globally in the recent worldwide rankings 2018 done by Airhelp. The ranking was based on assessment of the quality of service, on-time performance, and the passenger experience of a given airport. AirHelp examined data from December 22, 2017, to March 20, 2018, factoring in delayed and cancelled flights, public reviews from trustworthy sources and social media sentiment analysis.
On this account, JKIA emerged the best by scoring highly, flooring its African peers and hosts of globally respected airports. JKIA scored an overall 7.9 out of 10, 8.3 on-time performance, 7.2 quality of service, and 9.3 on passenger sentiments.
This was an improvement from last year’s scores. Kenya Airports Authority Managing Director Jonny Andersen termed the recognition timely, coming at a time when JKIA is undergoing major upgrading and modernisation works.
He was also upbeat about the direct flights between Kenya and the US expected in October this year, saying they would boost passenger traffic in and out of JKIA.
have you been to the airport lately? Let me not get started with the international arrival in terminal 1E.First off, rude immigration officers asking wierd questions about your travel, you ask for directions from an airport official and its like you ask for a kidney donation.Facilities are positioned so far apart you contemplate between missing your flight or waiting at the gate sulking like a three year old,the only thing available are overpriced chocolates, coffee and alcohol…who gave the award by the way? with rampant corruption in these here lands,i wouldn’t be surprised if we bribed our way to this aususpicious award:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
Airhelp is a delayed flight compensation company. In the EU, if your flight is delayed, you are entitled to compensation from the airline. Airhelp acts as the middleman.
It’s a legit company with a lot of press.
From what I gather, they gets reviews from passengers. It’s like a Yelp for airlines and airports.
This is not an ‘award’, but rather a ranking on what their data says.
It’s likely the JKIA ranking is based on the reviews of 2 passengers who enjoyed their visit, while Frankfurt had 20,000 passengers.
Getting 5 stars based on 2 or 3 reviews cannot be compared to getting 4.2 stars based on 1000 reviews.
@spear do you take some of these feedbacks to the people that matters. The rudeness part from those KAA (those that wear some yellow cardigan) officials is too much, worse is that they don’t look at the age of their victim. One time I saw a young lady bark at an old lady who was only asking for the right boarding gate.Tears welled in my eyes.We reported her but the guy just gave us a smile and promised to take action.
If such kind of attitude is still there then this award is a hoax.
When fire burnt the international arrival terminal, former President Obama called President Uhuru to show his support during the tragedy. He also offered help in its rebuilt. It was the fastest credit GoK got from world bank which is not a surprise as its their puppet institution. $200 million later JKIA new international arrival, associate lounges and improvement in various areas of the airport is visible. The end result is that we qualified for FAA category 1 status and KQ can now fly directly to usa.

CS Matiangi ended all that sloppiness at the airport. All different departments and stakeholders used to report to their various heads and work on their own schedules. Well they all report directly to KAA MD Anderson. From KRA, Immigration, Police, Kebs etc. A work schedule was worked out and harmonized work ethics protocol agreed and signed. Inspectors are now spread out to monitor and manage all staff. Passengers are given a form to report good or bad service which goes to KAA management. The staff mentioned and inspectors will have to account for bad reviews. This single act has changed service delivery a lot if you ask stakeholders like KTB. Customer care has improved a lot but of course out of 7.5 million passengers there is still a minority who will feel they didn’t get 100% great service. However vigorous security checks continues, in fact a passenger will undergone screening four times before they board. Reason JKIA was a failed target of an attack and since then security was enhanced to maximum.

Sometime I look at such pictures and instead of feeling elated, I get disappointed, if we can do this to jkia, well paved roads and pedestrian paths, well lit buildings, clean and nicely done interiors - why cant we replicate the same to other public places, especially hospitals, schools.
Though good, but it reminds me of those houses where they keep nice quality visitors utensils hapo siting room in a cabinet with a glass door. while watoto wanatumia those rusty mabati cups.
Immigration officers are never friendly anywhere in the world, i travel, i should know!
Facilities… go to dubai or AMS uone kama hautawachwa na ndege kama hiyo ndio attitude. I was moving from one gate to another i literally took a train, a ramp, walked like half a km, stairs lifts.
Airport products are expensive, i agree with you on that. But maybe we are not the target market…we
