Jubilee Dev - Garissa 50MW Solar plant by China Jiangxi Corp progressing well

Chinese firms to develop Kenya’s largest solar power plant

A leading global solar power product manufacturer, today announced it has signed an cooperative agreement with China Jiangxi Corporation for International Economic & Technical Co, Ltd. (“CJIC”) to provide technical support for CJIC’s 50MW solar power project development in Kenya. Under the agreement, JinkoSolar is also appointed by CJIC as the preferred module supplier for this project.

The project is planned to occupy 81 hectare and is expected to be one of the largest grid connected solar power plants in Africa. Located in northwest city of Garissa, Kenya, the plant is expected to produce approximately 76,473 megawatts hours per year, reducing yearly carbon missions by 64,190 tons and saving coal consumption by 24,470 tons annually.

With an arid climate and a vast desert landmass, Garissa is geographically optimal for harnessing solar power. The pre-assembled modular approach is planned by JinkoSolar to facilitate installation and future operation and maintenance. Additionally, pouring pile and spiral pile design will be utilised to protect local vegetation. The introduction of solar energy is expected to generate significant value for Kenya’s energy landscape, by ensuring sustainable opportunities for diversified economic growth.

This should help to shift day time load from hydro which can be brought online during peak evening hours. Interesting development

The peoples republic of chiken

The ruling party CPPNU is doing fantastically well!

That’s why I’m not a big fan of solar power. Its only useful during the day and that also means clear blue sky days. At night its useless since you can’t store 50MW of constant power in any battery. Anyway since its meant for off grid use its ok.

I have always thought the same… Nuclear is the best followed by hydro then geothermal.

Commendable project…lakini, si jeshi la Vijanaas will blow those panels ama transmission lines up to the skies?

Umekuwa ukipost some positive development stuff from various parts za country, sasa si ungepost kwa subfora za counties.been following up huko na hakuna kitu naona huko.

@Deorro, is it possible for you to make it possible to tag subfora za on such threads so that if one goes to the specific subforum they can find it there. Another option would be to let content posted on subfora appear on all threads list. Sande sana.

I thought all regions were connected to the main grid including garissa and lamu. I even think you did a thread about it

Yes, Garissa town is connected but not the interior of the county that this plant will serve.

I think the second option works best

With the production of solar power, I guess there is a possibility; the power can be used for greenhouse farming in the semiarid region.
Some Solar panels located above greenhouses, utilising part of the land beneath, which would create jobs in an area with few employment opportunities.

I hope it’s not a loan from the Chinese

How about the nuclear waste disposal?
The African Great Rift Valley has major geothermal heat flows with the potential to produce an estimated 20,000 megawatts of power; 7,000 megawatts in Kenya alone.
According to a March 2017 report, geothermal cost was; one kilowatt-hour of geothermal energy costs $0.07, compared to $0.18 for fuel oil‑generated power. Just like with Solar power, it can help improve agricultural production and support cottage industries.

Its not a loan. Rural electrification advertised a tender for remote solar plant and they won. They will finance, built, operate and transfer. However loans to our energy sector has always been indirect loans that pays itself without Treasury using public funds. For example if its a loan, the entire cost is passed to the customers to pay for it. Since independence all loans to our power sector has been repaid by Kenya Power through our monthly bills. In fact our entire power industry has been built by loans and repaid on time.
