Jamaica is “moving on” and intends to become an “independent, developed and prosperous” republic, the country’s prime minister has told the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, amid protests calling for the United Kingdom to pay reparations for slavery. In an official meeting with the royals on Wednesday, Jamaica’s prime minister, Andrew Holness, told them the country was grappling with “unresolved” issues. The Cambridges arrived in the Caribbean nation on Tuesday to calls from some quarters for the country to drop the Queen as head of state and become a republic.

On November 4, 2019, President Xi Jinping met with Prime Minister Andrew Holness of Jamaica in Shanghai. Both sides agreed to lift the two countries’ friendly partnership of common development to strategic partnership.

Xi Jinping welcomed Andrew Holness’ attendance at the second China International Import Expo (CIIE) and official visit to China. Xi Jinping pointed out, China and Jamaica, both developing countries at a critical stage of development, have huge potential and broad prospects for bilateral cooperation. It is hoped that the two sides will make concerted efforts to constantly push forward China-Jamaica comprehensive strategic partnership in the new era.
Xi Jinping stressed, China and Jamaica should maintain high-level exchanges, enhance communication in experience of state governance and administration and strengthen synergy of development strategies. Taking the opportunity of jointly building the Belt and Road Initiative, the two countries should raise the speed and quality of cooperation and cement people-to-people and cultural exchanges. The Chinese side supports its companies to invest in Jamaica, and welcomes more special and superior Jamaican products in China. The Chinese side is willing to work with the Jamaican side to advance the relations between China and Caribbean countries, enhance international cooperation and cooperation in multilateral areas, jointly uphold multilateralism and the multilateral trading system, and safeguard the common interests of developing countries.

Such rare achievements in the world have lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty, and promoted global economic governance, benefiting people from all countries including Jamaica. Your proposal to hold the CIIE showcases your foresight and sagacity. China opening its market wider to the world will greatly boost the sustainable development of the global economy. The Jamaican side hopes to learn China’s successful development experience, and stands ready to actively participate in the joint building of the Belt and Road Initiative and strengthen cooperation and exchanges in such fields as infrastructure construction, logistics, tourism, culture and sports. The Jamaican side firmly supports multilateralism and is willing to play a positive role in promoting the relations between countries in the Caribbean region and China.
