South African artist Ayanda Mabulu’s latest painting has caused quite a stir. In quite explicit detail, it shows President Jacob Zuma “pleasing” Atul Gupta in the cockpit of a plate that is about to crash. Is this art? Is there something that artists should or shouldn’t be doing? And are we, the public, who are the consumers of art, the ones to decide what that is?
