What is the plan of Kenya government?
Estimated population of Kenya today is about 50 million people…maybe more.
The WHO led plan is to get the vaccine doses at 300/- each for the ‘poor’ countries.
Most likely Pfizer, BioNTech etc will choose to fulfill the pre purchase orders for the USA, EU and other developed countries.
KEMRI, it seems, can be able to do prototypes…according to them in 6 months…not sure it it would be cheaper or not, but, at least the vaccine would be available for Kenyans.
Let us assume for argument sake that Kenya will vaccinate 50% of the population = 25million people X 300/= X 2 (each person will require two doses). They need 15 billion shillings.
The questions are:
(1) Does Kenya have the 15 billion shillings for the exercise…as a matter of priority?
(2) Since we are not sure there will be global equity in the distribution of the vaccine, what are they doing to empower and finance KEMRI to develop the prototype and vaccine?
Ukweli is that the mwanainchi is not properly informed of what even our own scientists are able to do or are doing in this life or death pandemic. It’s ok to give us the daily briefings on the statistics of the sick, dead ect. But, we have many scientists and scientific organizations in Kenya and it would be nice to hear from them regularly as to what they are doing to address this issue. Should we be hopeful or not?

Global fund and the likes of GAVI will buy and give them to kenya for free. Remember most childhood immunizations in Kenya are free and costs in real monetery terms over 20b a year, which is subsidized by these organizations
This is the first time they’re utilizing the mRNA approach and also keep in mind that vaccine development takes 7 years on average. This whole thing is so rushed and I don’t like it! What would really suck is, later on, they come out and “apologize” to the world for mistakes they hadn’t foreseen. Saa hizo your DNA is mutating into cancer and your body has developed crazy autoimmune diseases.
The govt is probably going to steal the money allocated for the vaccine program and then inject people with whatever; saline, water. I personally I wouldn’t take the vaccine if Uhututo is the one behind the administering efforts.
It’s not a “rush” but a shortcut. In normal times things take longer because the paperwork has to go here and then there, but now everything is going directly to the Head of State, cutout the middlemen.
