Gachagua went for populist politics and a narrative that is beyond his understanding.
Did he win the debate? Yes, rightly so. He told people what they want to hear. He gave them a person to direct their frustrations at. He lied about his corruption issues. And most importantly, he worked on polishing his lies and agenda into a cohesive tune.
Will he win the election? No.
Debates in Kenya have never won elections. The winners are always the losers in it. People like Miguna Miguna who shone in it were nowhere to be seen.
Debate in Kenya is just another form of entertainment to the mwananchi, whose reality will never be in sync with manifestos and deep analyses of their politicians.
It’s why Gachagua was congratulated by Ruto. He sold the best lie and incited hype, albeit short-lived, on Kenya Kwanza.
Winning the election is the headache they ought to be concerned about.
