Cord is planning to spend over Sh300 million to net the maximum number of new voters in their strongholds and to recapture the Malindi parliamentary seat.
The Star has learnt that the opposition coalition has directed all its 24 governors to each donate Sh10.5 million for the two key activities to shore up numbers ahead of the 2017 duel.
All the 135 MPs have also been instructed to contribute Sh300,000 each, while its 700 MCAs will give Sh50,000 each to finance the opposition’s latest effort as it goes flat-out to strengthen its bedrock against a major Jubilee onslaught.
The fundraising directive will fetch a total of Sh316 million in the effort to neutralise Jubilee’s offensive in Malindi.
Cord plans to spend a big part of the millions in funding a flurry of initiatives at the grassroots aimed at wooing unregistered voters.
The decision was arrived at during a meeting between Cord principals Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetang’ula and all Cord governors in Kisumu last week.
But the strategy met with resistance, with a section of governors terming it a plot by their coalition bosses to extort cash from them ahead of the general election.
Those who spoke to the Star yesterday expressed their dismay and dilemma on how they are expected to account for money from the public coffers.
They said their current budgets approved by the county assemblies did not factor in the exorbitant demands to finance the two political activities as proposed.
“We support efforts to mobilise people to register, because I would want these people to vote for me. But, really, how do we get this money; I mean from what vote? Maybe from our pockets, but it is too much,” an ODM governor from Western complained when reached by the Star yesterday.
Speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation by his party, the county chief said most of them were shocked when they were told to deposit the money in their relevant party accounts."
