There was only one tv station: KBC was called VOK. Tv used to start at 3:00 pm (?) and shut down at 11:59pm.
On weekends they had a movie series from 11:00 pm. Dallas, and another called Hardcastle and Mckcormic. Hiyo Mckormic was a show about a car speeding. As a kid it was an achievement to watch that show, because it was so late. Ulikua unangoja you sleep and wake up 3 times before 11:00 pm if your parents allow you.
Sometimes, inafika 10:50 pm, a message pops up on the tv ati “ due to technical difficulties , VOK is unable to bring the final show”. Ilikua inaboo sana. Whatever program ( what you call shows or series nowadays) you wanted to watch, was not guaranteed.
7pm ilikua News ingine noma. Had to start with what Moi was doing. Sunday they had a cook show and a debate show for primary schools in Kiswahili. Kids would crum and and spit methalis paka Unaogopa.
Nice! naweza kumbuka kwanzia 1997, news ilikuwa ni Moi for 15 minutes.
Telly ilikuwa inatumia battery, ilikuwa inapelekwa charging kila wednesday ndio Friday tusi miss friday na sato late night movies. My siz then alikuwa kadem ka form one ndio alikuwa na hio responsibility ya kupeleka na kuchukua hio battery mahali pale number ten along juja road (@kush_yule_mnono lazima anapajua…) charging fee ilikuwa 25 bob. Life ilikuwa simple and so sweet.
@Real2 naona umetuangushia Walker texas ranger, sasa hii ilikuwa mambo baddest.
I remember 1990 when KBC would start airing at 4pm till 11pm.
Before that time ilikuwa inaonyesha verticle lines of different colors.
Then it would start with the National Anthem. Our eldest sister who was in charge would blackmail us to finish all house chores ndio akukubalishe u watch. Then would make us stand at attention as the anthem was being sang. Gooood old days.
Then ikaanza kufunguliwa 12pm. Kina Bold and the Beautiful, Neighbours, Sinbad, Tahamaki, Ramayan… Days when things were ideal with totally nothing to worry about but to look forward to tomorrow ndio ucheze na marafiki.
Halafu KBC General Service radio nayo na midday melodies, instrumentals from 2pm,sundowner, Saturday night show, forces request, that children’s program on Saturday with the Hynie the laughing hyena song, Sunday noon with Jee huu ni ungwana…
Those were the best times ever.
VOK , static on tv the whole day 3pm a globe appears ,then lines then the flute music playing a giriama song , then the national anthem, then 1 cartoon He-man, then hard Castel and mccomic , then from there its boring adult stuff like proffessional view or mambo leo , or UTNA
