Read @Duke of Busia below, and then go read about the Bush/Gore battle: Presidential Election of 2000 - 270toWin . It all came down to Florida’s 25 electoral votes, and as luck would have it, Jeb Bush was the Governor there.

To answer the question. The United States is not a pure democracy. That’s by design. In most cases, who ever wins the majority of a particular State takes all the Votes of that state. Each state has an assigned number of votes depending on size. California has 55. Florida has 22. If you get minority you lose that 55 or 22. It’s all or nothing. However gets to a total of 270 becomes prezzo. That’s the basic. It’s more complicated.
Most states are either democratic or republican. So both candidates are guaranteed those 55 or 22. The candidates mostly compete for the swing states. Those that are undecided. Trump did it by bullshitting blue collar workers he will bring back industrial age jobs to small towns in these swing states. Clinton told them the truth which they didn’t want to hear.
