How I registered my first business

So I had just left my second job at some Restaurant in the City as an IT support technician to “pursue matters of Personal Interest”. Having placed several (like 10) applications around, I intended to knock out each and every Interview I would be called to. I got invited for an interview at some Software Development Startup on Mombasa RD. Kufika interview, ni mimi na “CEO”. Wallpaper za maua maua na wavy lines kwa ukuta…and a lot of unconventional stuff around. This was the first of the many interviews I expected to knock out. His old ass picks some specs on the table, takes a peek at my Papers, then up at me with a smirk on his face. First Question was, “Why didn’t you get an A in highschool ?”. Nliamka nikateremka stairs nikifikiria business name, nikashika njia ya tao hadi sheria house. I registered a business name and within two weeks, I had all structures in place and had converted one of the three inquiries into a job. They called to inquire if I needed to re-schedule the interview and I declined. This is my Second December, no regrets so far.

Good for you bro.
I plunged out of a skewed partnership and turned my hobby into a job. Best thing is that I got to spend time with my daughter before she started the school system.
I have registered my comeback firm so 2017 my hands won’t be too greasy… or tank too empty.

Nice. Entrepreneurship is a steep learning curve and its not for the feeble minded. But its a fulfilling rewarding experience. Mentor people along the way.

How does it feel to wake up everyday at 5a.m. everyday knowing that you’re going to be in the same place for about 9 hours everyday hadi retirement?

You build systems and run the biz remotely

Business ni kupanda na kushuka. Sometimes unaeza pata deal poa, ama biz inaeza enda poa for a while. Saa ingine ukame inaeza hit uende ukikaukanga hadi ushindwe mbona uliacha kazi. Nlikua nikiumia sana when starting. I would get a serious deal, make some good money in a short period and overspend. I would then be forced to the extremes including hibernation from social events to cope when the drought hit. I learned to ensure that, when business is good, use it as an opportunity to cushion yourself from the ukame that is usually almost guaranteed to occur at some point. Until you master the market patterns, lows and peaks and their relation to social, commercial and political variables.

  • It’s always rosier across the fence but it rarely translates into what you perceive.
  • Do what you love or love what you do (I have a lady friend who loves food. This year, she just moved her roadside chips mwitu to an eatery at a busy corner mtaani. Oooh she’s gonna get fatter - she is fat already)
  • Marketing. Muhimu sana. Exploit all opportunities available yet still avoid kubore wasee by knowing when and where to mention what you can do for them.
